Finally got my 98 DTR rebuilt after it was stolen and dumped in the river. I've just ridden it for the first time in a couple of months and I forgot how soft the front suspension was. I hate the front of the bike dipping so much under braking.
I'm going to be doing the fork seals soon, and I was thinking I'd try to firm up the suspension while I was at it. I was thinking if I used a thicker fork oil this might help (the haynes manual says use 10W oil).
Has anyone else tried to do this? Does changing the fork oil work? Is there anything else I can try?
i've heard of filling more oil in there, under presure that is! i don't see how a thicker oil would do you any good. but hey give it a try and let's hear how it goes.
Thicker oil will only slow the fork down on the extension stroke. You need a firmer spring to reduce the bob under breaking. Try puting some large washers on top of the spring and refit the cap. I added about 40mm which firmed it up a little
yeah that seems like a good idea ive been looking for post like this as i wanna add a few mil to my front end as im gonna get a bones for rear end. what kind of washers will i need ??
Well, For firming up when breaking a heavier weight oil should work... I asked my mechanic this same question and he said a heavier weight oil would do the trick. wethere too take his word or not i dont know. But just keep it in mind.
