Set the preload on the shock for your weight.When i sold a previous dt to a mate he wasn't able to touch the floor very well.I altered the preload and it was fine.You can easily lose upto 6 inch on the seat height.

Gav what kind of tool do you need to lower the rear shock?

Its easiest to remove the shock altogether and adjust it by the large nut at the bottom of the spring.A normal spanner is all thats required.It is possible to do it on the bike but its very fiddly.

iv recently stripped my shock,cleaned it and rebuilt it and one thing i found was that the adjuster nut was seized solid due to years of crud getting in there as a bit of advice soak the nut overnight in wd40 and when adjusting go backwards and forwards with the nut to cut through any crud and rust biggrin

Well with a bit of patiance and a little bit of fiddling,
 ive just managed to lower my bike while the shock was still on it.
didnt loosen a nut anywhere else.
