Rusting DEP
Permalink

My dep is starting to get a little rust around the Letter and Weldings from being out side in the rain while im in college.

Whats the easiest method to get the rust off? Will a wipe with a Oily rag keep it from rusting?

yeh dep front pipe is nickle plated steel.. ****ty nickle plated at that.. Wire brush/wire wool the rust off then keep it oiled up.. its a bitch but id rather do that than replace a £150 front pipe every year!!

It would be great to find a NOS front pipe and then get that properly chrome plated - now that would be tough and smart.

BTW NOS = new old stock

I overheard a convo between two guys in a bike shop I was in recently, one said that he never puts WD40 on his pipes to clean them as it will eventually cause damage and rust over time. The logic in my mind thought this can't be right, I put WD40 on me front Dep pipe after almost every ride to keep it clean and prevent rust. Once a week some autosol. Is this true though, surely WD40 can't be bad for a Dep??

I tried the DEP Gel, didn't work, my DEP Pipe is completly ruind now, I've had it a good couple years, kept it well maintained but it just wasn't enough. I was told by a friend that the Brillo Pad with the pink stuff inside it is the best thing for them, when you start seeing rust, use one of them on it, then wash it down with some gearbox oil, and wash it everyday with the oil, the oil is a lubricant, which actually layers the metal, and will keep it protected, if you do it everyday.

Hi guys. I was thinking about this when i woke up today. After reading some of the posts. WD40 Is the worst thing you can use. It's well knowen as Rust In A Can. Sure it fees up most things that are rusted but don't clean off the rust. I bought some spray witch is like WD40 but cleans off rust and sorts out stuck botls and nuts. Cant remember what it's called though, cost me a fiver only used it a few times. a lot of people say that crome deps are C**p and not worth the money. What's your input to the Crome dep? are they worth the money or is there a better chamber then the dep?

Personal preference mate, i love the look/sound that DEp gives and plus it looks the dogs! i just hate the standard sound, i'm more of the rapid tinny sound which i love.

Yeah jayjay similar to what i've been hearing lately too about wd40, oh btw wasn't plusgas you have is it in a blue tin? I found some in my garage and seems pretty decent stuff.

Only autosol from now on with a pre wash down.

Porky that would be sweet i would defo buy one for me DT xD. I've got some stainless pipes on me new bike. Not sure if they are the originals being a 98 but after a good clean and polish they have come up like mirrors. Stainless does seeam abit heavier though.
