hi,i'm new to this forum. just bought a 2001dtr and it has a bit of a problem.the bike starts without the battery. when it runs the lights flicker and get brighter and then really dim to the point of flashing when it ticks over. i topped up the battery and charged it. when i fitted it again it made no difference at all. i presume the lights etc are powering from the generator. do you think this is due to a bad earth or could it be a duff reg/rec. or could it be a short circuit somewhere? any advice would be greatly appreciated. jim.
if you find an answer, let me know please, mine are exactly the same, but annoying because if your rolling at night you cant see anything lol or brake lol
will do. only bought the bike three days ago.determined to get this sorted. if all else fails i'll just replace each electrical component one bit at a time.
okay then, if you find the solution, then will be really good, ive got used to it now tho, had bigger problems to sort out on my bike lol how you finding the dt? had bikes b4?
i havn't been out on it yet.bought it as a none runner.cheap. it was advertised as such. plan to do it up over the winter.i have four bikes and have been on two wheels for twenty two years. passed my test in 1988 on a mark one dt125lc.
great wee bike. it was six volts and used to boil its battery every couple of weeks, nightmare. swapped it for a 250lc which i still have.
yes. had my lc for twenty two years. stolen once.returned rebuilt, smashed, rebuilt, hit a bus,rebuilt.........you get the picture. as for the dt its got a unrestricted pipe and dep silencer. just want to get it running right first then take it from there. i guess i'll need to learn how to post pictures aswell.
the dt seems to be running ok apart from the electrics. the guy i bought it from said the electrics were goosed and the clutch seized. pulled in the clutch.cable tied it to the handlebar. left it for an hour put it in gear and gently rocked the bike back and forward. voila clutch freed off.works fine. as for not seeing the bus....i was on my way to work in the pissing rain one morning bus in the bus stop, left indicator on, passengers getting on. safe i assume. five feet from the back of the bus,bus pulls out LEFT INDICATOR STILL ON. wet road. skid, hit bus, break collar bone. bus drives off. and then to add insult to injury a taxi behind me shouts for me to get out the f##kin road. can you guess what i did with the arm that still worked!
the bus drove off! hope you got him done, i see buses doing that all the time, polish driver near my old house always left it on for at least 100 yards before remembering everytime. bus drivers are crap and mardy gits. was it sitting around for a long time? also do your lights only work if the engine is running? all my m8s bikes turn on if its off lol
yes police followed it up. i'm always wary of buses in bus stops now. indicators or not. the bike had sat for six months the seller said. think he got fed up with crap lights and just put the bike off the road.that's what made me think the clutch was only sticking due to not having been used. lights dont come on if engines not running. crap. just not prepared to ride it like this. will definetly get it fixed.
haha well this is my first bike, never bothered me, just got used to it, didnt know anything was wrong til someone started complaining about it on another thread, thought all DTs did it lol
i'm working away from home and wont be home until thursday night so cant even work on the bike. what you could try is running a wire from the negative terminal of you battery to a bare metal bit on your bike. this will show if you have a good earth or not.
got home at the weekend and checked wiring loom. found that the neutral relay under the left hand side panel was fried to a crisp along with the block connector. replaced these. now have horn, indicators, neutral and oil lights, brake lights and the powervalve servo works when the ignition is switched on and engine is off. with engine running i have the lights as well. bike is now stripped. going to get the frame and swing arm powder coated.
Always wondered what that little box was for as my early DT does not have one but the spare (knackered) loom I have from a later DT had one plugged in.
