Brake fluid leaking
Permalink

Was out on my DT earlier, noticed my rear brake was getting really bad, foot pushing it all the way down and barely any effect. I pulled over and looked over the brake and there was brake fluid(i think its brake fluid) all over the disk and splatted all over the sidewall of the wheel etc. I went home and cleaned it all off with brake cleaner, took the bike up and down my street, checked it over again and it had came back, disk was coated in fluid.

Any ideas where exactally its leaking from? the hose looks fine and the join to the caliper.

I expect you will find it is the piston seal in the caliper that has perished, you may find your piston has corroded and its that causing a bad seal.

There is a piston and seal kit available for about 35 quid, that should solve it.

It's not a difficult job, if you've not already get your self a haynes manual, I consider myself very competent but I'm always referring back to it.

basically it involves splitting the caliper from the carrier and then removing the piston, sometimes harder said than done but should just pull out, then it's just a case of cleaning things up, replace the old seals, fit the new piston, fit caliper back on the bike and bleed the brakes.

Just looked on youtube at a video of this being done, looks pretty simple. Can you get the piston out without an air compressor? will it come just just by pumping the brake?

Yeah should just come out by pumping the brake mate providing you still have fluid in there and the seal is'nt to bad.
if it's seized in the caliper, put the caliper in a vice but don't crush it, then use a pair of grips on the piston as you don't have to worry about damaging it if your replacing it.

Yeah, the brake is still working somewhat but its really bad since the disk is covered in fluid, hopefully i can just pump the brake to get it out, i'll pull it apart tomorrow after work and see what the piston is looking like.

Looks like the YZ uses the same rear brake, I googled the part number from wemoto and came up with

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YZ125-YZ250-REAR-CALIPER-PISTON-SEALS-4KJ-W0057-00-/380297831020

Will this work?

Turned out to be the brake hose, so after replacing the seals, piston and pads due to them falling apart all of that was a waste :p oh well its a whole new brake now with braised hose :)
