First, my sympathies that you ended up buying a bike without being able to do a proper test ride beforehand and then finding it was dog slow - if I interpret your post correctly.

Secondly, my recommendation would be to do a search of the TDR section here to see what people have done before on destricting this bike, any power-valve issues and aftermarket exhausts that have been fitted.

Thirdly, do a Google search on exhausts available for this bike as this could restrict your choice. Just because its not on ebay doesnt mean to say that nothing is available.

Finally, if money is no object on an exhaust then my recommendation would be initially to find a rolling road in your area, run it up and then compare to stock performance figures. If there is a difference, get your local Yamaha dealer to service/overhaul as required and then put it back on the RR to make sure it is now to spec. Then, take it to Nikkon Exhausts in the Luton neck of the woods, tell them how you want the power delivered and get them to hand-make one. Good luck and hope this helps.

There's something seriously wrong with it if it struggles to hit 50! Mine flys upto 60 and tops out at 85 on the standard gearing.

Does it go any better with the choke on? If so it suggests it's running weak and be something as simple as a blocked carb.

Dingle, I think Nikkon went bust mate. And Kazaki, if the bike still has the standard exhaust, this is probably why it's so slow> The DT (and the TDR I assume) all had a serious restriction in the exhaust. Either a big fat washer welded in or smaller diameter tube welded in the pipe into the expansion chamber to restrict the breathing and give it a learner legal power output. Remove this restriction by cutting it out or replacing the pipe and you should notice a huge difference, Try phoning DEP Exhausts and asking them what fits the TDR.

Also make sure your powervalve is the right way. Take the front of the exhaust off and look up the exhaust port into the cylinder and see how the powervalve is sitting. They sometimes inserted them in the wrong position for UK bikes, again to keep the power down. All the information is on here if you search for it and go and download the manuals from here so you know what you are looking at

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if Nikkon went bust, I know that its been said here before but when you get a pipe from them its already rusty, I got mine about 9 years back now and he had to make it so it wasn't one of his stock and when it arrived I took it out of the box and it had next to no laquer on it and had already rusted at the welds, it was expensive for the time as well (more than a dep) and I was kind of expecting it to be stainless steel (he could have fabricated them in stainless for roughly 2.5x increase in his materials cost), also in the picture where it was advertised it showed a tailpipe with the bike and when speaking to him on the phone he was talking about the full system but no just the expansion chamber arrived so if the guys gone bust its only down to him being a tight arse, he could have made a killing selling stainless expansion chambers when I was younger because nobody did them and to be honest the steel he used was that thin that it wouldnt stand a chance with all the salt they throw on the roads in the uk.
