Understanding how an ignition switch works?

Ok so i would like some info to further understand how the ignition switch ( where the key goes in ) works!

I was at the understanding that when Off the switch broke the circuit. When turned on it makes a full circuit allowing electricity to flow and perform the actions.

Ok so my bike is for offroad use ATM and wiring is bad. It has no ignition switch or anything. But bike does start. Does that mean some wires has been chopped and joined?

Adding an ignition straight to the bike as is will it have any real effects? Obviously if it is wired up i will need to unwire it to allow ignition to function?

Just trying to get all info so i can see if it is really worth getting a new wire harness. Trying to do without it as i would have to buy new.

when my bike got niked they broke my ingnition and i ended up hotwireing it by acident you swap some wires around going to the cdi and then u dont need the ignition honestly i would just splice and wire in a cheap 2 wire ignition into the coil wires and then have a secret kill switch but if you are wanting to use a battrey and full clocks you would be best to get a igniton witch is easyer with a new loom

Well i would be wanting everything at somepoint yes. So i guess a new loom it is then.
Thinking of getting a daytime MOT for now and adding a new loom/ignition and add the lights once funds allow me to.
