 Well here we go a new kid on the block and just to introduce my self and apologize in advance for probably asking silly questions that may have been asked many times before , so on with the introduction ,I am 22 and a little bit and hope to stay that way for a good many years to come much as I have for the last ???? well alright I am a young 65 ,I am a Marshal for road racing at all levels Motogp BSB Club and the big one for me the IOM TT and MGP , I have a van that I have knocked in to a camper van and to have a way of getting around the IOM and leave the wife where she wants to be ,I got a trail bike a H---- XL200 a Italian import job and take it on a rack on the back , but have had a lot of trouble with it but we wont dwell on that but have just acquired a 89 DT 125 power valve job that has had many years of neglect but I think is worth some TLC the previous owner had it for 17 years and admits he has done nothing to it in the way of maintenance it did run after a lot of kicking and huffing and puffing and did not sound too bad rattle and bag wise but the front pipe has a big hole in it and the are filter had not been looked at for many years by the look of it and the spark plug looks like it was original fitment ,the frame has a fire amount of rust the swing arm has a hole in it and the rear shock bottom bush has a lot of play in it and that up to press seams to be about it ,what makes it appealing to me is it is light enough for the back of the van and unlike the XL parts look to be available ,so I have rubbed the frame down and am painting it with Hammerite rust eater and Hammerite smooth to tidy it up and see how we go ,so will no doubt be asking silly questions along the way , I am new to the off road stuff but tried a couple of green lanes over in the IOM and the mans ability did not match his ambitions ,but hope to improve on that as time allows,so now it is on to the how to section , I feel sorry for you lot you have no idea what you have let your selves in for ,Ha Ha

not so ling back i joined, and its more than you could wish for been a dt owner, all the help & advise you may require!

nowt like a good project tho !!

get some pictures on along the way so we can all have a neb !

and just to let you no iv all sorts of spares if you need them got a nice genuine un raped dent free exhaust system if you need one lol

but yes the older ones were the ones i was dreaming about been a youngen at schoolsmile

id love to hear it after 17 years of thrashung lol, i bet it sounds like a glass jar in a washing machine ha ha

all rebuild parts are really cheap and easily avaliable online or at any suppliers in the market

one of the best points about owning a dtr is the spares you can get for minimal price

Welcome to the forum Eddy, trust me once you start your project it will become an obsession, and a right labour of love, I did my own last year, and it's pretty much there now, but still looking at things to add to it. Plenty of lads in here prepared to help out with info and parts too if required.

Thanks for the welcome guys the fact that they were made for such a long time so plenty of spares is the big attraction for me as I said earlier I had the XL that on the face of it is just the job for what I wanted but the Lecy foot on them is a problem and the Lovable MrH does not recognize the Vin number so spares are a night mare and I got sick of being messed about and this bike came up at a price I could not refuse first look and I was not sure if it would be worth the effort or not especially after the other fiasco the XL but after looking on fleabay and you guys on here I thought nothing ventured nothing gained and the more I get in to it the better it looks , and as yet nothing that has put me off just have to have it on the road for May 21st to take to the TT , good job I gave work up as a bad job not worth the effort LOL

ha yeah i cant wait to do that another 25 years yet like ha

looks to be all there any way the bike just abit wethered ha ha

plenty free time on your hands then to get it done, id live in the garage if i could but family life gets in the way of that ha ha

just hope my lotto numbers come up friday ha

then this site will be seeing the best dtr ever made hasmile

So who has been a busy busy little boy ,and before some smatypants zooms up and see's how fast the paint was all I am going to say is I have never bean known for my skils with a brush ,but Ha Ho if the bike end's up running as fast as the paint we willbe half way there Ha Ha

welcome to the site m8 there nothing cant be bought back to life again with a bit of hard work. when you paint the underside like you have leaving the engine in
you can use tin foil to wrap round the engine an all the other bits you dont wana be throwing paint all over

Oh now you were not supposed to look that close the idea is to just give it a quick going over for now and see how it goes then hopefully after the summer if it looks like a keeper I will strip it down again and make a better job of it so just enough to get a MOT and back on the road as cheap as poss for now in time to go to the TT fingers crossed the big problem at the mo looks as if it will be the swing arm and shock lower bush so will have to see how we go

hahaha got ya lol ,,dont envy that job at all yeah not an easy task my friend when its been in there as long as it has, it took me a 3 friends a week of smashing an drilling an bouncing on the frame in the garden to get my original one out

was looking on the for sale section on hear and a arm and shock off a 2000 bike sounded good but it would appear that the 89 and the 2000 are different so not sure now ,the arm would weld no probs it just the bottom shock bush that is shot every thing else looks usable so the shopping list at the mo stands at a Plug air filter sort out the shock and see if she is a goer

all iv ever used for shock bushes is  a suitable size round bar then drill a 12mm "I think" hole through it

warm the bottom shock mount up with blow torch then press the round bar slug in with a bench vise

job done !smile

the problem at the mo looks to be the circlip that holds the bearing in, that does not want to move every thing else came apart and the bush bearing thing in the bottom of the shock its self is the one that has play in it all the rest looks ok

welcome to the forum eddy, and btw the 2000 swinger and shock will fit fine m8 well most parts from 88 to 07? or wen ever they stopped making them will fit no probs ; )

Sorry for not getting back on this post Bradders MDK and Norfe boy Md thanks for the thought about parts but think I now have What I need for now the little bike in the corner now goes MING MING MING just a bit of slap to get rid of on the swing arm dog bone knuckle chain and sproks and a beep beep hooter and a bad connection on one rear indicator that only works when it wants to MMM , and me I am a North Yorkshire lad Norfe boy  and the XL  Bradds
