Which Oil ????

Slightly clutch related which oil do you use in your gearbox ??some people say that they use semi synthetic car oil in there bikes but others say that it is no good for bikes with wet clutches , so am never just sure which to use , but I have been all over our town looking for some bike oil and only one had any ,and that was at a price ,about £3 more than car equivalent , why is it that as a biker I am always left with the feeling that I am being riped off ?? or is it just me showing my Yorkshire breeding again ??

Tell ya what Norfe, putting petrol in there would cause me concern mate, as it could break up or damage the composition of the clutch plates, or even the stuff they use to stick the friction pads on to the plates, in the past to flush out gearboxes, I've used a detergant oil, and diesel detergant oil is best for flushing.

And aye you can use 15w40, but not good when it comes to a cold start as its thicker, alright down here where we dont get it very cold in general, but back up there it can get a bit parky come winter. Plus thicker oil has a tendency for blowing oil seals.

Haha I'm the same when it comes to paying for stuff
But for all my bikes I've got a friend who works at a garage and I just tell him how much I need and he gets me 10:40 semi synth,
His garage doesn't work on bikes so the oil I always get is supposedly for cars but I've never had a problem with it

And talking about being a biker and getting ripped off.. My bike tax for the year was £53-54 and my mate's just got a new Toyota Aygo and his tax for the year was an unbelievable £20!!! disbelief To say I was upset was a real understatement!!

Yeah and I was using that oil. Clutch was slipping like made for a week until I sorted it out. Built it right (thanks largely to you :) ) and now works a treat. I was surprised how normal it is considering it got absolutely ragged!

Well over the years I have read articles saying that car oil has additives in that damage the clutches of bikes , and that bike oils have some thing in it to stop clutch slip ,and have often wondered if it is just the oil companies coning us for a few extra £ £ for nowt

I've personally never noticed a difference between using car oil in my bike
I've been told that it's fully synth can be bad for the engine as it's 'too clean'
Again no idea what the chap was ranting on about as I get semi synth and couldn't care less LOL
I've got other important things to remember

Well must admit that I  have allways gone for the bike stuff , and have always gone for the semy synthetic , and on my big bike always will but for the DT I must admit I was tempted to save a few £ but chickened out and played safe  , I just wondered what others did
