Weird clutch problem
Permalink

Noticed the clutch is playing up a bit on my bike, bit hard to explain but I'll give it a go lol. Basically I've adjusted the clutch so it has the right amount of free play on the lever. When you pull the clutch in it all disengauges fine, but sometimes when you pull the clutch in to change gear or whatever, when you release it stays really slack as if the adjuster's been wound in. It doesn't slip or anything but then if you pull the clutch lever in again it drags really badly. Then if you pull the clutch in and out a few times it goes back to normal. Never had this problem on a bike before, haven't taken the side casing off yet but anyone got any idea's on what it could be? And nothing's loose, all the adjusters are done up tight etc. Does also snatch a bit when you pull away, got a feeling that could just be the oil I used though.

Cheers

Hmm clutch cable's new so don't think it's that. Probably no way of knowing until I take it apart. I'm starting to think it could be the steel plates that are damaged might be getting stuck on the hub or something, would explain why it's dragging as well.

wunta thort it be the hub, if owt it will be the friction plates if theres notches in the basket where the plates run on, but either way needs stripping and checkinsmile

I've had a similar problem. When I used to pull the clutch it in was really slack after releasing. Clutch would slip like mad and the clutch lever would go stiff. This clutch would stop slipping at this point.

What was it?

I built the clutch plates up wrong.

Anyone ever seen one this bad lol? Got worried when I saw metal filings in the oil. And I think the grinding was caused by that damper ring thing that had snapped. This engine must have taken a beating in it's life lol.

Yeah hub's had it mate lol that was against the hub itself so it's just grinded down. Did wonder where the judder was coming from lol, that'd do it. There's a breakers down the road from me so I'll grab the bits I need from them. All the other plates seem fine so I'll probably just replace the one. Just realised though there must be another bit of the damper ring floating about somewhere, hopefully it came out with the oil and hasn't worked itself into the gearbox.
