head stock bearings

well after been offroad today when got back on road noticed a bit of funny noise and wobble at speed and under braking(front brake) all coming from front end, so got back cleaned it off and parked it in me workshop(back kitchen) lolwink

anyways i put it on a stand and upon inspection noticed that (a) forks could do with a service and (b) noticed a bit off play that feels like its coming from head stock/yolks not a lot but it is noticable.

so was wondering if any of you have had to replace the bearings and how big a job it is? would i need anything specialist when it comes to tools? im fairly confident and have a manual but cant beat a bit of real advice from someone whos recently done it. And how big a job is servicing forks.

also looked on ebay for bearings and only found one listing but it says for dtre so i messaged the shop asking if they will fit a dtr they said no, but they do have dtr ones in stock but there twice the price talk about daylight robbery, so could any of you confirm wether dtre bearings would fit or was the bloke telling the truth???

so basically bit of advice on how easy or difficult is it to replace headstock bearings? are dtr and dtre bearings different???

and advice for servicing forks??

cheers guys

Did this ages ago, the difficult part was removing the collar thing, fcuk me that was nightmare.

The yokes are different on DTRE and DTR so maybe that has something to do with it. If parts weren't superseded (is that the word?) then they sometimes end up costing more as theres less demand. Found this out while building a 89 model.

I'd say it's an easy job with the right tools

Moved to headstock section because you know what's wrong.

have you tried tightening the lock nut under the top yoke??

some times with off roading the impacts and vibrations loosen things up over time

take the froont wheel off

drop each fork out

then take off the top stem nut

then take the top yoke off

then undoo the lock nut enough for you to see the bottom bearing

bang plenty grease on it

then push it back in

then grease the top roller ball bearings top bearing is old school balls in a cage

once its greased tighten the lock nut down again

i like mine pretty stiff so once its how u like it  rebuild it

chances are that once uv greased and tightened it there will be no play

unless these bearings are run ungreased for years on end they dont normally wear out

iv never had to replace a single one on any bike

1st 1 i bort was for my usd conversion coz it was a diff size needed

http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/spares/epc2.asp?modelID=9133&PageiD=24&m=YAMAHA+DT125R+++2000+STEERING&uID=0

number 6 is the lock nut

this pulls all the surfaces together to take up the slack and im guessing its just come a little loose over time

hope this helps biggrin
