You can use TIG on mild steel as well as stainless and aluminium, but for the exhaust which will be like tissue paper in places, I'd go with oxy-aceteline gas welding for the best results. You can get by with using arc welding as long as the plant goes down to about 25 amps and using 1.5mm or 2mm rods, and blob it, you'll not get a decent run without blowing through mind, same with MIG, you need to blob it on, bit like a single line of fish scales, if ya get me.

Also spend time prepping the area that needs welding, wire brush any paint rust thats there so its pretty clean, or you'll get whats called porocity, bit like an Aero chocolate bar.

all done, none of you are seeing the pics though cos although it doesn't look too bad, it's scabby looking and imho horrible. LOL. I burnt through the metal once and then got pissed off so cut up some metal and covered the parts that have cracked and just tacked it into place using the ARC at roughly 20amps, then a 1.5mm rod then it all didn't go too badly. :) Managed to get it all airtight so.. Although it was a complete waste of time as a mate of mine called me and said he saw my struggling facebook status about it and offered to hack the restriction out of my standard exhaust. So I'm gonna run it to him tomorrow and hopefully will have it back on by midday :)

When welding using mig or arc cleanliness is next to godliness and prep time is time well spent cut back to solid metal I use mig with .6 wire and amps turned down to suit takes a little practice but any rust or paint and you are in trouble never mind wire brush angle grinder is the welders best friend if you cant grind it it ain't going to last any way

Also if you have a crack going thru metal you can drill a hole at the end and this will stop the crack going any further, hope this helps someone as you've done yours now lol

I've had him derestrict my original exhaust but when we opened it, it had nothing restricting it at all. :/ confused as its an original 3mb exhaust and hasn't ever been opened up!

Whacked that on and pegged the powervalve open! **** me she flies! Albeit sounding like it'll rev itself to death. I can safely reach 80+ and more. (if I dare to into 10, 11k revs.)

best way to learn welding is get a box of old cheap sticks or wire and crack away at some old metals ... I am no pro but have always done my own welds for around 8 years now. never pritty but did the job ..

also lol .. was only yesterday I bought my first welding mask.. well 2 tbh cheap 2 for £10 lol .. and yes had plenty of bad nights with hurting eyes and now need glass for distance ?????
