id put a 34mm, the thing with bigger carbs is, if its too big youll lose bottom end response but will fly once you come into powerband. with a 34mm you wont necessarily loose alot of bottom end. a 38mm probably. the yz's use a 38mm and if your dt in the the same state of tune if would be an good decision to use a 38mm.
had a 24mm on a little 125 pitbike (everyone said its a little too big) with a 32mm straight through exhaust and porting work by yours truely and it used to fly, noone ever said it was slow
Exactly. I personally wouldn't touch the carb unless you've had some decent modifications done to the bike, i.e; bigbore kit, porting work, (different engine ;) etc.
I mean at the most you'll notice a slight increase on throttle response, if not just a placebo effect ;)
In my opinion it's a waste of money, but each to their own and if you have the money to throw away then by all means go for it.
cheers for the input guys, saw a kx 38mm on ebay for 20 quid so was thinking of getting it but dont think ill bother now, will get a 34mm if i find one cheap enough tho
Ran sweet as a nut with the 170cc and the right air mixture. Was running PV pinned open. Full DEP system and Athena. Plus all and any derestriction lol.
NO MATE! IMO and it is just my opinion NO! Even after all the mods I did to that DT it was still not quicker than a 125 Aprilia RS.
Best thing to do mate is to spend your money in sending your barrel off to be ported! You'll gain much more performance that way than the 170. Plus less strain on the bottom end.
ahh alright, dont think my dads going to let me get any engine work done now, just had it all completely overhauled so should be no problems for a long time
after riding motocross the dt is abit boring to me, thinking next bike will be a ktm exc 125 or something similar, have you still got your aprilia and dt?
I've got an RE and and an RS. RE feels like a 50cc compared to the RS. I wouldn't get an EXC personally. Far too much maintenance needed to keep those going. Better off spending the money on a second hand top end for a dt and shipping that out to a company to port. That way you could always switch back if you were having problems
ahh cool, tbh i wouldnt mind the maintenance find it fun really, wouldnt mind having a crack at doing some porting myself, no doubt id probably be awful tho xD
Uhhh, no. You require precise machinery to do that sort of job. Can only be done by an expert who knows what they are doing and the best way to get the maximum performance out of that cylinder. This is one job that HAS to be sent away.
With the EXC, trust me, it's more hassle than it's worth. You'll never get the chance to ride it cause it'll spend too much time being rebuilt. They are absolutely rapid! But that comes at such a price. They constantly require an overhaul. Well that's my experience of them.
Better off having a DT and an EXC. Like me and the aprilia. DT is for everyday reliable too fook, RS is for the odd day when the weathers nice.
thats a fair point but the EXC is still very tempting , still got to do my full license and wait 2 years after that til i can get something bigger than a 125 so doubt ill keep my tdr that long, decisions decisions
Calum, that video was uploaded May 21st 2010 , you're 19 on the 16th of July, making you 16 when that vid was uploaded mate, I'm getting the smell of something and it ain't two stroke being burnt.
You are very true NEV. But I really just think that it's easier to say the bike is mine than explain how Kyle is my brother and that the reason why I've got a DT is because of him. And I spend every day with him doing random shít and one summer he decided to buy the 170 kit and we spent all day fittin it and then we realised that it wasn't very good.
Basically it is a huge story and it is easier to say it is mine than to explain how I would know whether or no the 170 is a good buy or not.
Here's my bike and my brothers bike next to each other.
And in the ever so slight background my bike and the RS.
Here photo of the 160cc Polini kit installed to that RS
And here taken a photo in the exact same location as the first location of the two DT's
