plannig to spray my swingarm when I change to chain setup to the 520 conversion, question is what prep is involved and what paint, similar to prepping panels, i.e. use smooth grade wet and dry, primer, paint, laq, and also main question, what paint please is best, spraying it black?? :)

Thanks

Halfords rattle can Hycote Black gloss or Plasti-kote gloss black pretty much did a fair bit on mine, just crap fot tanks, as petrol eats it.

Yeah you'll need to bring it back to bare metal and because it may well have chips in I'd use a filler primer and do quite a few coats over any areas that are chipped. keeping rubbing it back with fine grad wet and dry to flatten it. Clean it with panel wipe, alcohol or some paint wipes ( they do them in halfords) then spray with Nev's reccomended paint. Looks pretty damn good on his so seems like the stuff to use.

I'd use a petrol resistanr lacquer on it afterwards as well as you have the breather pipes coming down near it. Might be wise to screw some old bolts into any threads and cover the areas the bushes going in. Basically only get the paint, prime and lacquer where you want it.

Cheers lads, whats the best way to bring it back to bare metal, sanding i take it, and what grade wet and dry would you use to do that if so and what paper would you use just before priming and between coats?? :)

Wire brush attatchment on a drill will bring any paint off to bare metal, for heavier duty stuff, ie swingarm, tank, a wire wheel on a grinderette works better, I used the wire wheel/wire cup on a grinderette, to take the paint off my tank, took about half an hour. not a good idea for taking paint off Aluminium mind as it leaves wheel marks, drill wire brush is much better, but obviously if you can't get hold of these, course grade 50 or 80 emery cloth and elbow grease works the same, just takes longer.
And between coats I used 400 then 1000 grade wet & dry, sorts out the orange peel finish does that. T-Cut at the very end

easy to drill wirebrush paint off  but also a  cheap decorators can/bottle of paint stripper  can make the job faster and less wear on the metal ..

Its funny you say that, used Nitrimors on my forks and it worked a treat, used it on my tank...and nothing. £8 worth of nitrmors gone and my tank was still covered in paint. I used a wire brush attachment on my drill in the end.

yeah I have done the same . think it comes down to the fact most tanks will have a clear coat that is resistant to petrol or other solvents ..best thing to do is give it all a run over with sand paper or drill-wirebrush to break throu that clear coat . ..  decorators gloss paint strippers are a better option and cheaper some times £2 a bottle  so you can realy dab loads on and note I said dab  dont paint it on smooth dab it on  in thick blobby coats leave for the time it says on the bottle  and dont let it dry ...

the best way I do tanks is once coated with stripper I then placed inside a black bin bag air tight and left it over night...and the next day as I removed the bag the paint just fell off  like dust 0% work  and any small parts that paint stuck in  just brushed away ....be sure to give it a good clean after as the chemicals will continue to eat at the metal .. wash and dry it well as rust will come with in hours

I've found that paint stripper/ nitromoors has been rubbish on the tank i've done. Wire brush and drill was best.
