Seeing as there seems to be a few on here that are into this stuff thought I would ask for some help

I'm just starting my final dissertation project for uni, and have decided to design and build a basic engine. It doesn't mean I can try and make the easiest engine ever, but it's a project proposal so I can focus on making it with as less parts as possible, making it more relieble, cheaper for the users to repair and maintain - and of course design it around whoever will be using it.

I'm just getting the prilimary research of current engine designs at the moment, haven't actually started yet. So brain storming what I could do at the moment I'm considering anything basic that has a fairly straight forward timing process.

I was considering electrical motors but focusing on converting chemical to mechanical energy so I can keep the prospect of generating electricity for places in the world that need it (again, no idea what the final idea will be)

Anyway to the point, so far I have;

  • Osscilating steam engines
  • Uniflow steam engines
  • Pulsejet engines
  • 2 strokes (aircooled)

Any other ideas? My mind has gone blank..

Aye in principle they are as easy as it gets

Only issue I have with them is the lack of practical uses, with the project I have to find a problem to solve for example I could use a steam engine to generate electricity in parts of 3rd world countries where they need vital communication - it doesn't have to be dragon den style stuff but needs to have potential for this sort of thing. As much as I'd love to just design one for the hell of it sadly I can't :(

Unless you could help think of a usage for one :)?

Make a little video of someone slipping on some two stroke oil and highlight the dangers of it being left on the floor. Then design a 2 stroke engine that will burn away all this nasty oil and transform it into a beautiful smell and lots of fun.

Never heard of a sterling engine. Thats brilliant. Imagine if all the candles in the world that women burned for no reason at all, smelly ones etc, were used on a sterling engine!

All well and good telling the blokes that they have all that lot to look forward to, but what I want to know is what they spout to the women suicide bombers, as ten virgin blokes in heaven doesn''t seem to have the same clout, anyroad you can see ten or twenty virgin blokes collecting train numbers on most train platforms come the weekends.
