coolent on my swingging arm

hi guys im new to the forum and i have just bought a 2002 dt125r, i just rebuilt the top end as done a 1mm rebore 1mm o/s proxy piston kit, riken rings, little end and top end gasket set. took it out and noticed water trail behind me. been looking and cant see where it comming from, only thing i can see is its on the front left side of the swinging arm, just wounderd if any one can shead any light on it. when i checked the rad i the next day i needed to refill it with a pint of coolant. Also when im under load around 5000 rpm it makes a crackling sort of sound which iv been told it could be the rubber that connects the front and back pipe as its split any info would be appreciated

I had the crackling noise, coming from the water pump side of the engine right? Only happens when you give it the beans? I never realised what mine was but shortly after all that my head gasket went and it smashed the inside of my engine up. I'd take it apart and make sure everythings all perfect inside.

Two things Superted, first welcome to the forum, mate, secondly the expansion bottle sits at the back on the left hand side above your swing arm, has the bottle lid popped off? as they do have a tendency to as they're under pressure most of the time. leaking pipe connection could be another thing, but more seriously another problem could be the head gasket blowing, not the end of the world but if you leave it too long it could warp the head, common reason is that people use cheap gasket sets off Ebay, never ever use those as they are subservient to the genuine Yamaha , or Athena ones.

Sounds very much to me like a head gasket issue. Lots of pressure in the coolant system will cause it to shoot coolant out of the expansion bottle like nev says. A 2002 offroad DTR had that. Was put together with non genuine head gasket, did exactly the same as yours is.

Take the head off and replace with a genuine and your problems should be sorted. dont forget to keep checking the head nuts as it passes through a few heat and cool cycles.

ok will try using genuine or an athena head gasket but i cant see it being that coz i have used this brand for all my tzr 125s with no problem and with the crackling noise i think it could be the water pump i will split it down the bottom end and use all the advice i have been given when i get paid and it should solve the problem will let u guy know how it goes and thanks again guys

Couple of things, does sound like a head gasket problem, they build up pressure into the expansion bottle and it comes out the overflow, happened to mine every time the HG has gone. Secondly, if the cylinder's oversized, have you checked the piston isn't clipping the power valve, as it does come very close on +1, my piston's still got a couple of little dents on the crown lol. And also I don't know if this is normal but when I fitted the head gasket to mine which is also on +1 the piston was actually hitting the gasket. That made the edges of the gasket flake off and I had loads of tiny little filings in the engine which isn't great as it killed the small end lol.

yeah iv put a 1.00mm o/s on it but my mate that tunes lambrettas for a living mesured it and gat a 300 feeler gadge between the power valave and piston on all postitons and my local dealer said i wouldnt have to start shaving my power vaulve untill 2.00 o/s but easy way to cheak pull it out and have a look lol. dont understand why the head gasket would go after 12 miles of ridding, just wounderd the expantion battle cap doesnt have a breather hole in it like my tzr does wounder if its worth putting a little breather hole in it

Wouldn't bother mate, head gasket's gone lol. Was the head gasket one of those cheap silver coloured ones? Mine went on the first ride, they really are useless, genuine one's still fine. What's a 300 feeler gauge, 0.3mm? Only work in thou lol. My dealer also said it would be fine but there are actually little marks on the piston where I took his advise lol, and you've got to remember things expand when they heat up. I'd still take a bit off to be on the safe side.

hi i think its the power valve cliping thats what the crackling noise is when reving so gunna pull it out and give it a little skim. and it looks like the water is cuming from the expantion bottle leaking throught the lid when the sysream presureisses, so gunna get an anthena head gasket on friday and hope that will solve the problem

Welcome to the forum! Silly question, but you have a torque wrench right? Even using a patten gasket, only 12 miles and losing 1 pint of coolant is pretty bad

yes it got torque up propply at 16 lbf ft like stated in the manual. think its had this problem before coz when i bought the bike the expansion bottle had lost its cap so i repaced full bottle with a new one, also can any on shead some light why the previous owner would have cut the sky blue wire which comes out of the neutral relay

I ordered some gaskets from Athena website couple of weeks ago, the Euro is pretty weak against the pound at the minute, so take advantage of it. I think I paid about £8 instead of £13, got a couple at that price. Only took about 3 days to come from Italy too.

Here yar.
http://www.athenaparts.com/eng dont worry it all gets converted to pounds when it gets to Paypal, out of interest though compare prices with what you've bought, on the UK Athena site.
