Decided to give it a good clean the other day, everything visually was cleaned including the chain and sprockets with water and a toothbrush.... I forgot to lubricate after and now there's surface rust on the chain, before lubricating what should I use to remove the rust??

Ah you'll be alright then. Just ride it for a few miles then lube it up again and you'll be good to go. Chains are pretty darn tough. Need a lot of iron oxide to cause too much damage
