So yeah after my bike almost being robbed a few weeks back the bike has been sat in a mates garage. Anyway got the new ignition installed today. Bike took a while to start, wouldn't turn over with elec start with choke, had to roll it down a hill in 1st for a while (bike didn't sound good, sounded like it wasn't firing, probs the carb) anyway after about 10m it started firing and kicking out a ****ton of smoke. Took a good 5 minutes before i could turn the choke off and have it idle.

Go on a good 30/40 mile ride, all fine. The occasional judder which i put down to the carb or the fact it's been sitting for a few weeks in a cold garage. Last five miles heading back to mates garage the bike cuts out rather briefly (can hear it going as if no spark, no engine power etc) then came back after about 2 seconds. And my temp light is on, so i pull over give a quick visual inspectionand the light fades. I carry on very cautiously but the light keeps coming on and eventually the bike cut out. same as before, hear the engine going but no power/spark.

I held my hand against the radiator it didn't feel very warm but the head did feel hot. What do i check first? I have a feeling something is up with the coolant system from it standing about for ages as i didn't have this problem before, maybe an air bubble? Going to have a look tomoz i hope it's that but what else should i check after it's been sat in a (freezing) garage for 3 weeks?

TL-DR: Bike sat for 3 weeks in cold, now it's overheating. HALP!

Maybe your thermostat is not opening. Take it out an d put it in boiling water and see if it opens.

Is there coolant in there and not just water? Thermostat could well have stuck. hopefully no warping has happened.

Have you got coolant?

If you're under furling due to a dirty carb this will cause overheating.

checked it today, coolant level was a bit low, topped it up and it seems ok now but going on a longer ride tomoz to see if it happens again, not sure what the cutting out part was on about but it was running fine today (ordered new killswitch/starter motor thingy as that's not working properly haha, diff problem)

Are the REs designed to cut out if the temp goes too high? I think that might be why it wasn't firing last night after the light started coming on

That light comes on way before its dangerous anyway. It's just a warning light.
