hello everyone ive been off for a while due to a new project a yamaha fz 600 89 ,
so ive sprayed alot of bits and pieces over the years with rattle cans but this job needs to be immaculate .im sort of lost when it comes to using clear coat (laquer) how is this applied do i build up the coats of primer then base then top and key the last coat then spray on the laquer then key then buff that ? .like i said im unsure as alot of people have different methods but like i said i have to get this spot on as this is a proper "built not bought" project im doing literally everything myself including full engine rebuild thats 4 cylinders yes 4! and all the welding etc etc .i won this bike for £67 off ebay and it is absolutely trashed in so many ways and really is not worth a wank, but hey i have persuasive friends lol .
so any ideas would be great im not working on a budget with this so moeny is not an object but the idea is to be completely self sufficient so no garage jobs here !,
i may be inclined to buy a compressor buttbh its going to be quicker this way as i am working on a time limit and i need to get this tank 100%
Depends what you want to do. If you want to keep it then powdercoat. If you want to sell it on for profit then rattlecan. But it won't last. It'll do alright for a quick sale. But it will flake and look gash after some weathering.
Powdercoat. End of. You can get a good finish with rattle cans but they will never beat spray. Also powdercoating js fsr more durable.
I'll agree to disagree. Powdercoating is £100+ rattle cans will be much cheaper if you're getting a cheap source of cans. You CAN get a good finish, if you do it correctly and use the correct primers to do the job, and use acid treatment and de-greasing. Mine looks professionally done, but I did it all for £40 on spray cans. And I used anti-rust primers and treatments, so it'll last about as long as a powerder-coat, but of course, it'll never beat a powder-coat.
I did mine this way as I couldn't afford powder-coating with the parts I had to buy.
P.S done with a rattle can:
Need the correct primer and sand paper to do plastics.
EDIT:
Before people go talking about it, on a close, very close inspection you WILL see cock-ups we bought the wrong primer for the frame. The plastic front also has its bad bits, where someone came off, and scratched it up, but I didn't have any body filler to do a proper job. My dad did all the spraying. Props to him.

The 2001 model dtr. Yeah that was my old one. It had 38mm carb. 170cc polini kit and all the derestrictions done. Still slow as fook. That 170 kit was a waste of money. Not the route i'm taking with this one. Bought a nikasil barrel. Having this ported and tuned.

Heh. You still got it?
Is that the one that got stolen or is that the current one?
That photo was taken the day i bought my new one. I had sold that to a mate at that time. But since he owned it he seized it and got it taken off him by the police. Lame. It sucked anyway. Its the most restrictes dt you can get. Slow.
