wire meltdown

Saw some smoking today from my bike when ignition switched on.. immediately switched off but damaged already down. Looks like wire from front stop switch has shorted somehow? Resulting in 2 wires melting plastic to bare wires al the way along loom. Have removed it completely from bike to cut open and look. Not sure what type of size wire etc to replace with? Was thinking of attempting to repairand replace wiresmyself ratherthan give loom to auto electrician, anyone knos if this a job for an amateur?

sounds a simple job if you can see all the damaged wire should be easy just to follow them and replace sections . not sure how the stop switch wire shorted is it not just a earth ? and for it to have shorted would have to come in contact with a live ?

loom stripped down, traced wire from stop switch at front brake-all way down loom(brown wire) cut out that section ready to insert new one- then further down the negative wire for battery had also decided to melt down too, resulting in black wire and red wire(it was next to melted wire)needing to be cut out and new section put in?The rear brake switch wires were safe(luckily)

when i bought new front brake light switch- from yambits- it wasnt the same fitment as original one- so i cut the wires and joined together and covered in elec tape-this enabled me to connect to original connectors. Looks as though it started there somehow?

All the other wires look ok- so 3 sections really i need to replace but unsure as to the thickness and correct type of wire??

Main brown wire runs down the loom
Red and black wires from the loom for the battery terminals

Yes they can. What year is your bike is it the one used as your avatar picture ? No wonder you had a melt down if you bypassed your fuse with shorting wires.

Yeah 2001 model. Think I got off lightly with just 3 wires needing replaced. Lesson learned though

Yeah I bet next time you make sure you connect your joins up properly. Anyway you could use the 89 through 98 loom on your bike but you would need the matching cdi, ignition switch, servo and regulator and change two of the connectors from the generator.

wtf your paying some one to rerun  or replace 3 lengths of wire  lol  thats almost as lazy or bad as paying to have a puncture fixed on a tube dtr tyre .. ppl these days are so clueless  kids get a puncture on a bmx and they think the whole bike is broke ?  when we was kids we got dads spanners out and fixed everything ourselfs

I agree but to go buy a soldering iron and rest of equipment costs more than what I'm paying for repair. If I had equipment then I would have done myself as per the rest if the bike which I have built! And also if any issues in future ny insurance company will have no way of finding me at fault if bike decides to go up in smoke ..lol
