Whats that sound? Video included

Hi all

I had to use my mates bike today to pop to the shops and picked up a gremlin!

Some nasty noise popped up and just wondered, with all your collective experience, you had any idea what it could be.

I'm hoping its nothing seriously big ,rings, bearings etc.

I'm thinking it could be something on the induction side, maybe reeds? But I have no clue what failed reeds sound like. I can usually pinpoint engine noises fairly well but am no professional.

A few thoughts I have:
exhaust/intake note change, sounds like somethings fluttering
almost a rattle/vibration like somethings loose
cant really hear it on full open throttle /positve throttle
bike still performs well on positive throttle but on neutral it sounds awful
most prominant at 5-7k rpm.

I'm thinking at open throttle/ higher load/ engine speed the reeds are closing but under the lower pressure of neutral throttle they are fluttering.

I had a quick look over for anything loose, exhaust header etc, everything looked in place. I will go back out tomorrow in better light and look it over more thoroughly.

Lower vid quality due to bandwidth and filesize shenanigans.

Thanks in advance, any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds nice whats the pipe.

Does sound a little rough. Take the plug out and have a look. If you're still not sure take the exhaust off and have a mooch. If in doubt take some photos and post em up here so we can have a look.

Still the crappy BigOne pipe :(

Literally less than 1/2 a mile before the bike was fine. A long straight, up through the gears, not thrashing the nuts off it mind. The vid starts at the first sign of the sound, I haven't ridden it for a while so I showed the vid to the owner and it was new to him too

I have a Giannelli full system ordered since august but seems I'm being stiffed by the ebay seller atm. First he sends an NSR expansion and Cagiva Mito can, and a DTR can. Now I'm getting seemingly ignored. Will be on the phone to ebay/paypal monday.

I was hoping to do some sort of review/video comparison, fingers crossed it still turns up/I get refunded or something.

Shame the big one is so rubbish. I reckon that sounds nice.

It could just be the pipe. I don't know i'ge never owned one.

I'd take a quick look up the exhaust port. It's probably just your mind playing tricks on you. But just in case its not best have a look.

sounds like the kick starter area the spring or clip kinda like if you push down the kickstarter while the bike is running ? let revs off and its all most a ticking vibration sound ? hard to tell in the video .

Had the exhaust off, all looks fine. Plug looks ok, a little coked and some blistering on the ceramic part, this could be down to the **** BigOne exhaust. It looked the same last time I checked after a few hundred miles from being replaced.

Had the reeds out and they look fine and seal nicely.

The crank has a lot of blueing next to where the big end bearings are, I think these are where the big ends have gone before. I poked my fingers in and checked for play but seemed like they are ok, you can also see through an oil way in the crank and visually they looked good, no blueing on the bearing rollers that you can see.

The engine mounts to the top tube spar did need tightening, I also tweaked the front mount point up too.

I'll upload the pics to imageshack or something this evening.

Taken the bike out for a run after putting everything back together, warmed it up and now sounds fine. Weird! But good I guess.

If it's blueing then it's overheating. You need to sort the jetting out. I would also have a look at how the oil is set up.

Make sure that when you roll off the throttle that the oil is still being fed into the engine. I uploaded where the position should be on a 2005 dtre.

cheap and nasty video but shows you how it should look at full throttle and off throttle.
