Hi I have a 2003 dtr125 and the expansion tank doesnt get warm even after a 15 mile ride.also the water in rad is a nice blue anti freeze colour but the water in expansion tank is just clear water.so it seems that the two arent mixingbike has no overheating issues however I have noticed that the expansion tank has a sports water bottle cap which isnt a great fit rather than the standard coolant cap.does anyone have any suggestions what the cause could be
So long as you have a pipe going from the radiator to the expansion bottle and that your bike isn't overheating I personally wouldn't worry about. I don't think mine has ever gone into the expansion area. Only when the head gasket blew and chucked water out of it. Blowing off the cap
Ok thanks a member I spoke to on ebay recommended this forum looks like a good site.bike is turning into a bit of a project so will probably need a few parts here and there and some advice
After fitting new temp sensor last night I have noticed the bike doesnt warm up when moving only when stationary could these 2 problems be linked thanks
After say half hour ride it was still sitting just above cold but if I stop at traffic lights needle will start to rise and then go down whenbi start moving again is it going to cause damage it running so cold
Engine gets warm will try feeling rad when I get home do u think it could be caused by thermostat could I test the sensor by filling a jug with hot water and putting it in that
Thanks
My vapor used to read around 155 degrees when at normal temp and went to 188 when spanked,if its reading "boinking"when its cold theres a problem with your gauge or wire.Follow the wire from the sensor and see if its touching an earth anywhere if not as said your gauge is boinked.
Will try that and post back old temp sensor didnt work cos connector snapped off soldered it back on and red hot all the time new onevis a bullet connector where old one was a spade connector but managed to push the spade connector on wire over the bullet connector on temp senderconnector was quite dirty and corroded.also rad felt warm after ride but not too hot that you cant touch it but carb warmer pipes didnt feel very warm
Have flushed it through all seemed flow nicely touched sensor wire on frame and gauge went straight to red have chopped off old corroded connector and replaced with buppet connector which is a nice tight fit will try it againin morning andbpost back results
After 13 mile ride this morning tge same fault was there is there a way of testing whats at fault touched wire to earth last night and gauge went straight to red is this normal and does this mean its the temp sensor
I'm not sure about the sensors but the RE might be different as it only puts on a light when too hot instead of giving a variable reading, might be worth asking yammy.Atleast its not overheating.
Afyer riding home tonight 13 miles last 5 on dual carriageway way at 70temp gauge was still the same left bike standing for 15 mins took rad cap off and using a digital thermometer it read 43 degrees does this mean its not heating up properly.
Thanks
Also would this be the thermostat or something more serious
If it was overheating after 13 mile if you took the rad cap off it would blow ya face off mate.
Personally I think your sensor is knackered,or your thrmostat is missing.
Nah its not overheating complete opposite gauge is reading cold all the time unless at a standstill then starts warming up.
Left it for 15 mins off after a good hard ride
Took off rad cap
Used thermometer to check water temp
Thermometer showed coolant at 43 degrees
Should it be hotter than this after a 13 mile trip.hopefully will get time to check thermostat tonight
Ok will do that a bit later tonight and post back thanks for all your help.if thermostat isnt working can I block off half the rad with a piece of cardboard until I can get hold of a thermostat as wont do it any good running cool at this time of year surely
