Thats a very big question! I trained as a video editor so if you ever want advice give me a shout. It's an expensive hobby to have if you wanna edit HD footage. My edit suite cost me about £2k and still struggles with hd footage at times.
macbook pro i5 8gb ram
Final Cut Pro X
G-Raid 4TB raid array
21" monitor
For a basic set up you're best bet is adobe premiere pro. it's got the features you need to make good quality films and alot cheaper. Edit from an external drive is a number 1 rule.
Dam andy there's me thinking I can do I good movie on moviemaker I'm gona have to look into that adobe realy wana make a good video not just me driving wana try cut it with the beat and stuff
seiki is the guru with editing check some of his videos bloody awsome ..........
some times looks great to have two angles in videos so if safe to do so after you take a jump or ride a path stop place the camera on something filming then go back 20-30 feet and ride or jump it again in almost the same way . then cut and edit them together to show two view points ... if that makes sense ?
kinda like this video is clear he has someone filming but could be done by yourself

Obviously an I7 would be better but money is always a factor. You can start with movie maker, but once you wanna start improving then you wanna move onto something a bit more in depth. The go pro footage shot in 720p at 60fps can be slowed down into a super slow motion quite well. if you look at the slow mo on the go pro hero 2 video its all shot on the go pro.
If you film the same thing a number of times from different angles you can just cut it together and it will look like its all the same section.
If you're gonna do static camera shots, use a tripod. Shakey camera is only good when its intended.
Nothing to do with the style of stuff you want but this is one of the first videos i did on the course i was on. was a camera and lighting unit.

Have a look at lightworks studios mate. That's used to make some professional movies.
Otherwise mate get yourself a linux based operating system since they have quite a lot of open source video editong software. Let alone linux is a beast of operating system.
You can do. The difficulty is over using. Alot of people when starting out over use filters, transitions and other special effect style tools. Colour balancing is one of the first things to learn. There is a spectrum of colour that comes from different lights. Sun light is actually blue, tungsten is very red. Our eyes automatically adjust to it but if the camera hasnt then you can adjust it in post production ( editing).
There are loads of videos and sites for basic video editing techniques but there is so much to learn. I've given it up as a career option now but still do it as a hobby. Helping a friend on a short film next sunday in fact.
Heres my youtube chanel that i dont use or havent touched in ages. a few other bits on there.
