2001 DT125 starting problem
Permalink

Hi guys, bought a 2001 dt a few weeks ago, shes run like a dream started first kick everytime, everything fluid wise was changed or topped up oj bike including fresh gearbox oil etc. The other day i was riding home and my dep pipe blew a hole right under the manifold, thinking nothing i plodded onto a friends which was a closer stop than home. Stopped the bike and when i went to start it the kickstart was seized. Thinking the worst i went to chuck it in the van, clicked it into first then into neutral and bam. Started. I patched the exhaust the next day and left it, i got the bike started and went for a ride before it died. It kicks over every ten or so kicks. Runs fine then cuts out! Actually managed to ride it earlier and take it up the gears no problems atall. Come back and left it and same problem. Wont start. And when it does it dies. Carb cleaned, sparkplug checked. Just really dunno what else to do as im not so hot atm! Also the dipped main headlight has stopped working with the speedo lights.. but they work when full beams are on... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ryan

Yeah sounds like you're going to need a strip down. The quickest way to check would be to take the pipe off and look up the port at the condition of the piston and bore. If you can post some DETAILED and in focus photos up the bore then we can tell you if you'll need a strip down or if the problem is elsewhere. But from the sounds of it you're going to need a rebore and new piston kit. You'll be looking at around 80-100 quid for the parts and then labour if you're not able to do it yourself. We'll all be able to talk you through it and theres already loads of posts on here about top end rebuilds. However you'll alos want to find the cause of the problem or it could well happen again.

Im afraid that isnt the case amigos. Shes running ****e. Gone from starting first time everytime to once every twenty kicks with the choke on. Only starts without choke when warm. Shes got a brand new spark plug but the spark seems weak. I could bearably hold it and spark it in my hand. Carb has had a full clean bike was stripped everything was oiled tightened checked and still no joy. Its also "popping" from the small hole in my exhaust every ten or so kicks. Thanks for the help guys.

the part that clips on to the top of the spark plug is the HT lead follow that up to a black cylynder that is bolted to the frame, thats your coil, it has a couple of plugs going into it and it is also earthed to the frame which could need cleaned.

your advice is strip the head to a person who has no idea what a coil is ?   confuse

my advice is pay some one who knows what they are doing you could do more damage than good you sound like you no nothing of bike engines and untill you at least learn what each part is and where it is or how it works then put down your tools and get some help .

Depends. Is having the bike up and running really important? If it's not and you want to learn then try it yourself.

If it is then for this time go and get it sorted. Learn about it later with spares.

I know what your thinking. I wasnt sure either. The grammar is certainly improved if it is.
