Coil testing.... think mine might be knackard... no spark
Permalink

just testing out some systems on my almost built dt125r 4bl 6/96 french bike.... and found I had no spark, so....

checked the plug cap resistance is fine 5.67

checked the primary coil and its no resistance at all... (orange wire connection on the coil) and the grounding point on the opposite end of the coil...

secondary (ht lead to opposite end ground) is reading 7.43k which is fine

anyone know anything about these.... im on the verge or ordering a new one....

havent a clue about how to test the cdi unit....

all advise is welcome....

Get a new one it won't break the bank and it'll be a fair while before you'll need another one, bout £12-£15 depending on where from.

If cdi working, powervalve will go through cleaning cycle.

i seem to be sinking deeper into the black hole called no spark and cant figure out why...

9/1996 dt125r mostly original 4bl 3rm8 (french) bike but with working powervalve and servo.
powervalve does its cleaning test when i turn on the key.

tested the ignition switch and kill switch,
cleaned the stand switch, all a ok
thought the coil was dead so bought a tested second hand coil and plug cap from a reliable source...
tested the pulsar on the flywheel, resiststance is within range per haynes, and it blips a connection when it gets near the raised metal on the flywheel (as it should)
wiring connections all oiled and nipped with plyers to make sure they are connecting good,
charged the battery (its like new)
new spark plug
checked stator resistance... its in range per haynes, checked voltage from stator when kicking it over... upto 18v ac ???? what is normal on your bikes?

tested the orange wire voltage from the cdi to the coil, it gives 6v dc when kicked over... it seems low 6v thought it should send out much more...

any advice or anyone know the voltage the stator or orange coil wire should kick out pls let me know... im up agained a brick wall on this lol

you could have a broken side stand switch bud try joining the wires together

yea Ive hot wired the stand for now, and disconnected the ignition cut off wire at the cdi (black/white), but Im edging towards the stator/gernerator.... being at fault... Just bought the exact CDI I need as a spare.. and am tempted to try and find a stator and be done with this headache... Just wish I knew how to test all the stator functions exactly...

for any of you who fit a 2004 crank to a 1996 bike (or simular) the flywheel sits further out and need to either bore out the flywheel a little, to bring it in 20-30mm to cover the generator, or as I did, put some washers under the generator/stator plate to push it out a little,

and now I have a spark...

I also have a coil plug cap and CDI unit bought in error... an expensive mistake, but unusual one, as the Stator/generator and pulsar were giving off the correct resistances, and generator producing voltage at kickover, and pulsar sensing timing... just not enough of either...
