as title lads, these are hugely popular abroad and i really fanc one as i miss the 2 stroke buzz and my runner 172 is far from ready haha

iv had a sit and ride on one and its a cracking size and the hero exhaust sounded fantastic

i just wanted to hear opinions on things to look for when buying one? past experience etc etc

Hey mate, where I'm from (Finland) they are both really popular bikes, but if i were to choose, I'd get a Rieju; It has the same engine as the 50cc Yamaha DTs (Minarelli) and better electronics than the Derbi, and in general, much higher build quality. If you have any more questions about 50cc peds and some tuning tips for them, I'm your guy biggrin

barbie senda **** ratty little bikes that drop in price and have as much pull as a petrol lawn mower.

DT 125 r pure classic with good pull and pulling power always going up in value and has the heart of a steam train .

you did ask for opinions

tbh my mate had a derbi 125 drd and he hated it sounded and looked ok but was a slow ass rattle can on wheels it sold for £600 tbh I think he robbed the buyer .

The 125 is a 4 poke so as much go as my honda msx ie none haha

The derbi I believe runs the same Yamaha engine as the rieju, the aprilia and the CPI, mineralli lump

The dt I realise is a better bike. But the ones local too me are 1600 odd

I'm looking at 800 for a 58 reg derbi. It's a toy not a daily use bike, and it's just to pass the summer as my gilera 172 is taking longer then expected and won't be ready for the sun this year!!

Karaikun, I'm comfy with 2 stroke tubing having built a few 172s in my time and fitted bigger carbs etc. the derbi draws me in as it sounds great and it's a big bike. Good fun for ripping about on and maybe some trail riding, all be it gentle riding 8-)

they run a am6 engine and as far as i know its not a yammy lump.

personally i wouldn't buy a 50 when you have the 125 4 poke and a runner 17.

for 800 you could get a shabby dt with shiping or kdx 125 kmx 125 ts125 crm125 rx125 mtx 125

The DT50 has a Minarelli AM6 engine same as the Rieju. The Derbi, Aprilia and other bikes now owned by Piaggio have the "worse" Rabasa engine. I'm not saying every Rabasa engined bike is bad per se, but the one I owned (Aprilia SX50), was terrible with a lot of gearbox and electrical issues and it seized at a bit over 3 000 km. Lot of jokes made about the quality of the Derbis/Aprilias here in Finland.

It aint got ***t all the 50 road legals ive ridden just gradually increase in rpms until they max out, obvs the dt's got nothing then bam! Powerband

That my idea of a powerband anyway, the technical definition of powerband is obvs something different, because 4strokes have them aswell

the dt shouldn't just go bam unless ur pv is pinned, the idea of a power valve allows decent bottom end until peak rpms are reached i know seanftw's dt certainly didn't pull anything like my rs 125 fp when that opened up the pv at 8k haha

now with a 50 their is no pv so infact the power band should feel greater as it will do from boggy to peak power

the derbi i test rode had a real snappy power band which was a nice feeling.

4 strokes may create power through a set rpm range better but i know my 2 valve 4 poke air cooled honda i use daily is about as exciting at any rev range, i.e. its not haha

But the step from a 50 to a 125 is so big in power terms, might aswell get a 125, not really sure what your after here, theres nothing about a 50 that outweighs the 125 2 smoker, isit the lack of power you prefer?

And i dont mean literally bam full power lol, but you know what i mean it hits that certain rpm range and it starts picking up on the power very quickly

Yeh im thinking more like offroad 4strokes, mx and that not commuters

its more the fact there cheap and highly tuneable. my 172 will eat a dt up as it has done before the port work and flowed case where done.

i just fancied an sm 2 stroke for the feel and sound 8-)

could do anything from wheelies to a field

the dt is a great bike but as said its like 900 over what I'm looking to spend

same way you lift a bmx or moped  small amount of power to weight ...

most kids  can keep a moped on back wheel all day

£250 later i picked up this

and after a little tickle with the spark plug and some fresh fuel it fired up and ticked away nicely

won some forks on ebay for £32 posted to replace the bent ones which will hopefully fit

few other little bits to do but in fairness after the forks it should be almost mot worthy
