Personally I wouldn't bother unless it's absolutely necessary. Every MOT I've been too they've never needed to check the VIN. Bikes get powdercoated all the time so it's a regular occurrence.

For the sake of ruining the frame I would wait until the MOT'er asks for it else I'd leave it alone. You will only end up rusting the frame and ruining the paint job.

I would scratch it back with a stanley knife or something till I uncover the full number.

Then I would neatly cut a rectangle around it and remove the rest.

I would then put some lacquer over it.

But as Calum says, it happens and isn't a big deal really.

I would feel a bit uneasy not being able to check my frame number, that's just me though.

how many letteras are there in a vin? got the coat off but i have a bad bad feeling about it
