I've got 11 tooth front on. But mine is 520 pitch so it's still quite big.
The problem you might have is that it may be too small to safely get the chain on. A decent renthall sprocket is £10. So things must be bad :/ As for it blowing up, no. It may rev its tits off but there won't be much load on the engine.
