so i was looking at a ktm on ebay its an exc but it doesnt have the reg, so i had dan check the numbers for me and it turns out it was nicked last year so thinking about my bike being nicked it would be nice if someone reported it aswell if they came across it so i did call the 101 number and told them the story and what do you know, they have asked me to call the local police thats in the area of where the bike is, WTF so im reporting a stolen found vehicle and they cannot even pass on the info and have me do it, if I could not be bothered because of how they handle this i would have not done that and the bike would never be recovered, so im susposed to do all the work for them, so now what should i get the person to hand over his adress because they probably are not even bothered to contact ebay for the details and i bet the ktm will still be online for the next week or so. If thats the way they treat our stolen bikes no wonder so many get nicked and never recovered.

here is a link

Its because they dont care at the end of the day, they just want to get through their day at work, get paid and live on

A police officer may be different, but the people in the office cba

And if its policy then what a load of bollox

That's total **** attitude from them, I would have demanded to see an inspector on the spot. That's someone's bike and the seller probably thinks its all legal if he's giving the details out for a vehicle check. It is od to see an EXC with no lights etc on that arouses suspicion in me at first glance

cops look at things this way will it help me get a promotion - is it worth my time and effort -whats the chance of a conviction -can we fine or make the gov money from this- will this be cost effective -

like if you report you home has been burgled takes them 5 hours to come out thats if they call at all as the theifs have left so chances of catching them are slim .

as said maybe the seller also thinks this is legal and also has been duped or ripped off ? take screen shots of the entire ebay advert and keep any details you get then tell him of your findings ...see what he says after .

The check only shows number of keepers an the dates they change only Dvla / police can get the owners details

it looks like the last owner only had the bike a month before it was nicked an seems like the current owner is unAware or he wouldn't be giving out the vin number

would be nice if it could be returned to its owner but unless the cops act fast I can see the e bay ad being pulled an the numbers removed an it sold as a field bike

does anyone here know anyone that's on a ktm forum an had one nicked from glousterishire area July last year

I realy would contact the ebay seller if need be charge him for the info of the hpi .

given that he is selling it in public along with giving out the vin numbers asking buyers to do a hpi says to me he has no idea its a stolen bike and may do the right thing and contact the police as he may have bought it from the real theif .

 maybe so ..

and maybe he trusted the person he got it off  but we all knows thats not always the case and its easy to be sold a dodgy bike with out the reg or v5  ..

but he sounds a honest block in the advert and  looks to have a good shistory or selling and buying .

Yes I agree with you all. Also a bad mistake by the person who owned it. You type in my stolen dt reg number about 3 4 forums pop up with my number and details. Put in that ktm in and nothing. This shows how useful it is to post things like that even tho it not might get found right away but a year and a bit later here we go and we cannot find who to return the bike to

the seller 100% doesnt know about the bike being nicked i spoke to him on the phone before and he gave me all the details but the format of the numbers was wrong (stars and dashes etc) so after that he went into his local ktm dealer and got them to confirm the numbers and then he sent them to me again

just txted him to see if he still has it and yes he does he has one someone interested in buying it to use it off road, he says that the ktm dealer said that it could have not been registered at all, but we know what happend, So here we are find a stolen vehicle report it and by the time they react the bike its probably going to be sold to the next person and who knows if they will get it back off that guy

It's all down to numbers, to make their clear up records look good the are not interested in stuff that is only a k or so they want to at the end of the year be able to say they have cleared up. X millions of £ worth of crime per man hrs spent on the job ( job efficiency ) justice and catching criminals don't seam to matter any more sadly

Don't believe the owner for a second. I bet they've shifted the bike now without saying anything to the police. Friends house etc

OK guys just to let you all know what's happening, I have been to the police given them all the details of the bike and the person I bought it from it has been confirmed as stolen and they are sorting it out. I have been told to keep the bike and it maybe recovered that was over a week ago and i have heard nothing since. When I bought the bike it was a non runner foot peg ripped off plastics broke no kick start broke ecu ect I spent a lot of time and money getting it right.the police have tod me to take everything that I bought. Off the bike before its recovered as this is classed as not part of the stolen bike.I will post back on here when I know what is going to happen but I doubt the owner will have it back but his insurance company might want to sell it.
And Luke you are more then welcome to come and see its still in my garage not at a friends and I don't live in priors park

good on you for doing the right thing .

I had a mate in the same situation with a awsome cbr 600 after the police came checked it told him to to move or sell it and it sat on his garden months with no word back from them ...

It might be a case that the insurance company might let you keep it at a fee as if they own it now rather than the last owner it would be better for them to leave with you and make you pay a small fee rather than paying recovery storage and auction fees if they take it off you

Yours now then. Would be a completely different story if they caught you riding it. Probably try and charge you with stealing it or handling stolen goods.

when my bandit was stolen it was three days before a cop showed up and even then it was a plastic cop as they are known here. not a proper cop but a wanna be. just got a crime number and told it would probably be striped for parts......we duhh. didn't think of that one Sherlock. it might be petty crime to them but its a lot of hard work for the owners. and on top of that I ended up getting a 750 virago chopper type thingy when the insurance coughed up ...........must have been delayed shock..
