what do you recon a good dt should go for ? I'm going to be looking for a 89 plate onwards. some of the prices on fleabay seem to be way over the top especially from some of the dealers. the moment something is called a classic the £££ get added to it. I swapped my last dt125r for a Honda cx500 and they are going for silly prices now.
Around the £1500 mark for a tidy one. I agree people think they're made of gold or something. They're good bikes, but some go for more than my Starlet which is just nuts considering how many DT's there are!
I know my local bike shop has a very tidy fazer 1000 for £1900. 30,000 miles on a 01 plate yet I have seen some very sorry looking dts with more mileage going for more .plus being a learner bike you can guarantee it will have been canned to death thrown down the road and be held to geather with rust and muck. I must be mad looking for one .but I love two strokes and have some fond memory's of my old dt 125 mx could not afford a dt lc at the time then came the dt with the ypvs fitted but by then I had moved up to a 350 ypvs mk1 another bike going for mental money now. Pity mine went BANG. I was thinking of getting another kmx 200 but have made my mind up now it will defiantly be a dt . By the way if I remember my local Yamaha shop back in the mists of time early 80s was charging £800 for a dt 125 lc I was earning £ 25 a week..
There are a lot better spec 125's that go for cheaper. The dt obviously does have that cult status and are fairly bomb proof. To be honest 2 strokes aren't like your four stroke motors. Even if the engine is hanging you're talking about a very simple job for a full rebuild and not expensive either.
Also since they're no longer in production they do tend to be more expensive.
I'd spend the few extra £ and avoid eBay. I'd buy a bike from someone on here that's well known for their honesty and projects. Scrin does a couple DT projects a year and sells them at the end. If I were new to buying one and had the money, I'd have one off of him in a heart beat.
Also funnily enough one of the DT's on eBay at £1,900 (and odd) is a frame that was sold on here. It's the blue one with the horrible rattle can spray job on the plastics, if you're curious. (I won't link it here so it doesn't show up on Google)
Yeah, its a 57reg on ebay at that Norman & Birch place............ they obviously buys frames and builds bikes up, they have a White/Red F reg 88 model claiming to be an original bike with all 91 model parts on it ? .................................. I wouldn't buy a penny chew from them lol.................
Not bothered about selling it, aint tried to sell it except on here but your welcome to make an offer. its as close to a brand new DT that your likely to find anywhere " Except Norman & Birch that is lol............ "
I know i've seen the bikes at Norman and birch on ebaythey have been on there for ages and the white and red one is being sold with the paper work saying it was a total loss so god knows what had happened to that...at the moment I've only got my gsx 750 which is worth about £ 800 plus £ 300 and I would not insult any one with a offer like that as MDK and scrims are very near on totally standard bikes . I'm after one I can supermotad as I like the style . winter is normaly not a good time to sell a bike so I'm just going to keep reading the forum and save up some more money.my mates are saying I'm mad dropping back down to a 125 but I just seem to have more fun on them and I want something that is up and running but that I'm going to pull apart and change parts as that's one of the things I like to do..
that's why I wouldn't make an offer . the pair of you have put too much effort in to the bikes especially scrims . I want something that's a runner to build up to what I want. Not buy a mint one that's been restored to a very high standard then chop it about.. I'm in no hurry at the moment will just keep saving and just keep a look out.
Ive got an immaculate Black 02 reg one in my garage belonging to my mate who has owned it for 7 years, he works away and has no interest or time for it, it runs perfect but the battery is dead and the brakes are seized so it probably needs new seals and pistons in them from being stood unused. £1300 will buy it last time he mentioned it.
A few on here have bought bikes with the same intentions as you, to modify them. Ended up buying lemons. At least in my experience. The saying goes "buy cheap, buy twice."
I paid £1,300 for my DTR. I spent about £1,500-£2,000 fixing it. I went in thinking it had no problems whatsoever according to the guy that had it. Word of advice don't buy a bike when they're desperate for you to come down and drop £100 off and insist on doing it out of eBay.
If you want a supermoto one, why not consider a DTX? Come with supermoto trim as standard. If they don't someone down the line took the SM set up off to sell it separately and put a cheaper R model's set up on.

Ouch Luke £1500 on Repairs? You literally could get another bike with that.
When my bike got nicked I payed less than that to fix it after I got it back. And the bike Was totalled. Front wheel caved in. Fork bushes gone. Swingarm bushes gone, handle bars ruined. Engine ruined. Ignition barrel ruined. Numberplate brackets ruined. Lots of stuff. £200 I got it through its next mot and a top end rebuild. Don't know how you spent that much but could guarantee you that you could have got away with a cheaper rebuild than that.
I tend not worry too much when buying used items. So long as you get it for the right price then it can always be repaired.
Yeah, what happened was I bought stuff it didn't need in the process. A new topend rebuild when I first got it, and then it turned out the oil pump went. Had a heat seizure and killed the bottom end seals and bearings at the same time. Then it went to Norfe for a rebuild. Then I bought a SM set up. Then chain sprockets, petrol tank and everything else that was shot. And a respray on the frame. Then engineer costs on getting things welded like the side stand.
