Aprilia Owners?

yO lads,

Finally managed to get a bike at long last....2004 Aprilia MX 125 SM biggrin.

I know a couple of members have owned aprilia mx and rs 125s previously, so I was just wondering if anyone could give me any maintenance tips and advice about servicing schedules? Ideally I would like to do all the work on it myself if possible, and learn as I go along.

The bike is simply a weekend toy, so I won't be commuting on it, and will only be used in the dry.

The current mileage is 5440, and it runs really well.

The previous owner showed me that the engine still has the original head and oem parts inc carb etc, and he always ran it on Castrol Comp2 Racing oil.

Calum suggested signing up to the Aprilia forum which I did, but they weren't much help....noooooo replies to my thread. I'm guessing its because they're mostly yanks on there, and the mx was never sold in the US?

It's the same on other Aprillia's. Same gearbox oil changes in X amount of miles or every six months, and keep the 2 stroke system full. Check all fluids, coolant etc. Check for leaks, make sure all the bulbs work before riding. And check your tyre pressures and lubricate the chain every 100-300 miles, or every week or so in winter.

Also, if you live in the UK you cannot possibly guarantee it'll always be rode in the dry. ;) Personally I don't see how rain affects a bike in anyway whatsoever. You can use a jet spray on them, so I doubt rain will do much damage. Nothing a bit of ACF-50 will prevent, to a certain degree at least.

Thanks for this Luke!

re: weather....I see your point, but I live on the weather app on my phone all the time lol so i'll do my best to avoid bad weather. I'm not really concerned about the rain affecting the bike, its riding in the wet, which has never really appealed to me.

just like its been said keep up with the oil changes and use good 2 stroke oil, also dont forget to clean up the powervalve blade every now and than as they tend to get stuck, thats pretty much it

Yeah the RAVE blade does get gummed up. Inherent flawed designed. Because YPVS rotates it doesn't expose itself as much to the gunk from the oil, but the blade does so will want cleaning every now and then. You'll want to do that to reduce stress on the components.

Just aching to get back on a supermoto mate. I love this bike and all the other bikes I've had, I just get bored easily. I almost turboe'd the VTR after owning it for a month I got so bored of it! lol
