Battery Charger

What battery charger do you guys use for your bikes?

My brother has one for his ducati which charges his battery at a faster rate, but I'm not too sure if I can use that with my Aprilia MX 125?

Most chargers adjust accordingly. But to be fair I'd never bother charging a battery for a 125. Such an easy job to bump and just charge it on the fly.

Has your MX not got a kicker?

I know the Rotax 122 engine has a blanking plate to fit on since the Futura had a Kicker and that's a 122 engine. Could look at retro fitting one. Just be a kickstart mechanism, idle gear and kicker. If it's anything like the DT. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

Ah right cool. So that should save some cash then. How do you bump start it?

Yeah....key in ignition and kickstart. I haven't started it since I bought it a few weeks back. I'm heading over to my lockup this weekend to start her up...didn't want to get there and the battery be dead.

So would the bike just kick start anyway.... regardless of whether the key is in the ignition or not?

No the key needs to be in the ignition. All the key does is turn a switch. That's it. As you kick the engine over you turn the fly wheel which will generate the necessary electricity to spark the the plug. If you think of motorcross bikes don't have batteries.

Bumping is the same as any other internal combustion engine, build up some speed and knock it into 1st and let the clutch out. Just be sure you're sat on the bike as to maintain control over it. I usually take a run and jump. So run along side the bike. Jump over the seat and as I land knock it into gear and then as soon as it's fired up grab the clutch. Done it too many times so am pretty pro lol.

haha. Sounds like good fun.

I'll see how I get on with it this weekend. Dying to finally get my CBT done and get out and have a ride on it. Not enough hours in the day at the moment though, and the weather his been awful up here.

The thought crossed my mind, but I don't fancy being harassed by the cops - They find any excuse to pull over riders in my neck of the woods, due to all the dudes who ride illegally.

Yeah unfortunately. But if it's insured, MOT'd and taxed mate there really isn't anyway they can tell. It's not like the system is linked. They'd have to make serious enquiries before they would find out. So if you're doing some illegal they'd check it.

Plus up and down the road is unlikely to attract attention. But if you can wait then yeah naturally wait. But it would be nice to at least ride the bike,

hmm Oh really? That could be an idea then, up and down the street to get the hang of things - baring in mind I have never rode a geared bike before lol...But I'm a quick learner. I think I'll be fine with clutch control etc, but its the gears that I'm not too sure about....i.e. how to get into neutral how many clicks up and clicks down etc.

1 down five up. That's more than often the way. Clutch control, well if you've done a car then bike is the same. So it's just getting used to it. 125's two smokes don't really have the torques to just let the clutch out and ride without throttle. But it can be done. So you can just practice that. I just like doing that for the crack.

The only really important thing to remember is to blip the throttle before you down shift

That just to give you an idea. It's probably more important on high reving four strokes as they can't keep up with the compression and as such lock the wheels up lol. Just ashort blip to match the revs and inject oil into the engine so when you go from low rpm to high rpm, you have oil to protect the engine.

Nothing major, clutch in, small blip down gear, clutch out. But if you just let the revs drop naturally then you'll be fine.

Naturally you don't want to rev the bollocks off it cause you look like a sap. But I'd always blip the throttle.

Thanks for this cal....watching that vid has made wonna get mine out even more now lol. you guys looked like you were a blast!. Your bros yz really does fly.

ok, so thats how to upshift, so is down shifting just five down one up?

Its funny you mention that about blipping the throttle....I used to always do that with my hondas...they used to go into gear a lot smoother doing this when down shifting.

Ey? It will make more sense when you ride it. One down five up means, from neutral you'll have one gear down (which is first) then five up (2nd,3rd,4th,5th and 6th) and neutral is in between 1st and second. So you'll be in neutral and you'll step on the gear lever to put in first. Then when you flick it up it will go into neutral and you keep pressure upwards and it will go into second. I remember on my brothers RS and on mine, Neutral was a BASTARD lol. Never had that problem on the DT. But I remember the Aprilias were a bugger. And it would always hit neutral between other gears. So if you don't give it enough force then it will stick in DMZ and rev like neutral. Be sure to pull the clutch in and put it in gear lol

lol...i mean would you simply do the opposite to gear down? Orrr man...don't say that...knowing my luck it will be a bitch to find neutral lol

That was down shift I was on about. It's whenevr you go from low rpm to high rpm you'll want to blip the throttle. doesn't matter about up

I get that. But how do you down shift? If up shift is 1 down 5 up, in what order do you down shift. Thats why i said is it just the opposite to up shift?

No. The gearbox configuration is 1 down five up. So neutral is located between 1st and second. There are five gears up and first is located one down. It's a sequential gearbox so you chew threw gears sequentially.

I understood that....but I didn't understand how to down shift....but now you said sequential box...it makes sense...just a case of kicking the shifter down.
