I expect I'm going to find this forum very useful over the coming months/years.
I'm an old sod (mid 30's) but came late to bikes after binning the idea of learning to ride when I was younger as my daughter arrived. My DT125R ('03 plate) was my first bike post-CBT while I faffed about trying to find time for mods 1/2. I've had it since 2011 and it now has just over 16k on it.
I intended to sell it last year to make space for another road bike (have a Thundercat & 950SM), but thought I'd have a proper go off road first so joined the TRF. Result was I loved being offroad but on my second ride with them the bike gave up coming home on the A1 nr Stevenage. I feared something serious so bought a WR450F to keep me going until I get the DT fixed. Only just got around to doing a compression test & it read 60/15/20 on the three tests that I did. No idea why the big variation in test results, kicked it a good few times for each test, but I think I can safely conclude that it's ****ed.
I did read that the pistons are sometimes considered a service item on these (all 2 strokes...?) & will often be serviced/replaced by 10k, so to get 16k out of it is perhaps good going.
Anyway, I've been quite happy tackling minor jobs on the bikes (eg pads, oil, cables & a clutch plates/springs on the T'cat) to date, but am actually looking forward to getting stuck into something more serious.
You're not old lmao! You're young if some of our senior members see this haha!
Nice write up.
Oh dear doesn't sound too healthy that! Yes pistons is just a serviceable item on all two strokes I'm afraid.
Good news is that's I'm here to help. Two stroke engines are incredibly easy to work on. Very simple. A full rebuild won't take you more than a few hours if you know what you're doing.
The bad news is that If you don't sort the piston out at its maintenance time then it will cost you more to fix it. Likely a full rebuild. In parts that will set you back around £200. Which is cheap if you ask me. And I wouldn't worry about labour. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty then it's a couple weekends with our help and it'll be as good as new. Very simple. Funnily enough I am selling a low mileage engine. But it's a rare engine that I wasn't selling cheap. And compatibility wise probably best you just rebuild your own.
Please throw up some photos. The best way to fo that is to use a photobucket account and link the photos to a project thread.
Most questions have been answered a million times so take the time to use the search function. If you still can't find what you're looking for then post up a new thread in the correct section.
I'm on here most days and know these engines inside out. So you'll always get an answer.
Best place to start on any two stroke, imo, is take the exhaust off and have a look up the exhaust port. That will tell you how bad it is.

+1 on being on here often, cals the lad when it comes to rebuilding/modding engines or frames! That said, anyone on here can lend you advice on any part of the bike. Ive rebuilt and blown up both 2 strokes and 4 strokes and my wr400 went bang after a weekend in france so, if you need any help ;)
Thanks chaps. I've a funny feeling I might call on some of the offers of advice!
Big problem at the mo is finding the time - it took me almost three months to do the compression test, so, although I will post up on here about my progress, it will be slow.
