Just done a few bits on my DTR ready for starting a new job tomorrow. Just checked the water level in the radiator and noticed its dropped slightly and has a layer of black oil/scud on the surface!
I know the head gasket is leaking slightly as it does the usual "piddle" from the side stand after a long run (its only a tiny bit) but after reading up this could also be a sign the water pump seal has gone?
I did pull the engine out to rebuild but put it back in today as I need it running for work tomorrow. Plan was a full monty strip & rebuild. Looks like I need a full set of engine seals as well :(
Was kinda expecting it, every bike I've bought had the promise "It's been looked after and had xyz done to it" only to find its on its last legs or bodged just to run.
Seems to fire up and run fine, just the usual issue of crap in the radiator and a small puddle next to the side stand...

Head gasket mate. It will be white creamy if it's water pump seal. Literally hear gasket is an easy job. Use genuine gasket and skim the head and barrel and you are good to go. I wrote a tut on a good way to diy the skim.
Probably is a good engine. Just non genuine head gasket.
I am selling a rare forged bottom end that's had a nut and bolt rebuild if you need an engine. It had everything replaced and uprated.
Yeah cheers Callum. I thought so as when the oil is mixed with coolant/water it makes "mayonnaise" as me and my bro call it.
I can confirm the head gasket is a cheapo crap one. I've got a genuine gasket ready for the rebuild but might crack the head off this weekend and get it swapped over. I wanna see if it HAS had a new piston & rings but I very much doubt it.
Bought the bike, completely stripped the frame and rebuilt it but didnt touch the engine as it was running ok but kinda wish I did now.
I'll bear that in mind buddy - I'm wanting another engine so that when this one needs rebuilding I can slap a fresh lump in there and rebuild the old engine without having to catch the bus to work! I can work on the other in my spare time without having to rush everything cos of work.
Cheers boss! I'll stick some pics up this weekend while I'm swapping the gasket. Got my stuff for skimming at the ready (might try the drill trick ;) )
