Why cheap head gaskets are CRAP!!

Ok so I decided to pull the head and barrel to sort out the gasket on my DTR. Cheap gasket installed upside down (yes that's right!)

The barrel looks in very good condition, still has honing marks. As for the piston - can anyone tell me what this is? It isn't a standard piston...

Also the head is in very good condition, no shrapnel damage in the combustion chamber. I gave everything a good clean, skimmed the head & barrel and some new gaskets - jobs a good 'un!

Could that piston be one of these? Forged & graphited? Seems to be the only one with a flat top...

Athena or OEM mate. Just stick to those two. You don't need much better than that.

I'm saying this from experience with 2 x DTRs both blew the cheap head gaskets. I've stuck with genuine yammy gaskets and will say without doubt they are much better. Not worth trying to save a few quid on gaskets it's just more work in the long run.

Anyone know what piston that is? Don't think it's Athena, but don't look like Wossner either cos of the chamfered edge. Top is also flat not domed

Wossners are polished tops and charcol round the sides. Either way I'd bang a domed one back in. Not sure why someone put a flat top piston in there, buuut it ain't rigfht
