I'm in the process of doing a top end rebuild on my Aprilia mx 125, and need a bit of advice from some 2t nuts.

I'm a bit confused as to whether or not my bike has been fitted with a temp sensor. When I took off the top end, there were a couple of wires, which were not connected to anything.

From My understanding, the temp sensor plugs into the top of the thermostat like this: (Aprilia Rs 125)

However, when I took my head off, I just had the main coolant pipe and a thermostat with no wire from what I can gather.

I've had a good read through the owners manual on the mx, about the digital dash, and there doesn't seem to be any values that display temperature:

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/363537/Aprilia-Mx-125-Ed02-2004.html?page=17#manual

So am I right in thinking a temp sensor never came on the mx? I do fine it a bit strange as it uses the exact same 122 engine as the rs (which has a temp sensor and gauge).

Haynes didn't do a manual for the mx 125, so I have been using the haynes manual for the rs 125 to help me with the rebuild...with some help from Calum also (Thanks)

If this is the case, is there anyway I can install a gauge to keep an eye on the running temps, or is it not worth it?

Thanks

So you can see the temperature gauge in the culinder head on the rs. That thing with the cap. Don't know why I thought it was in the coolant pipe.

But in your head it's been blanked off. I would very surprised if the mx doesn't have a temperature gauge on the clocks. I think someone on here has owned an mx before. But by the looks of it you need that sensor.

If you have a look at my build you will see my custom clocks, which have temperature sensors thay screw into the head.

Had a good chat with another lad today who has an mx. Aparently temp gauge and sender never came on the mx. His is exactly the same, so he uses one of these. Strange or what

Why? That is so dumb! It's such an indicator of imminent failure.

I hate you Calum!!!!.....My starlet won't be having any cash thrown at it this month now, because I'm on a quest to get the mx back on the road now instead lol.

I need one of thoses displays. With me not having a temp sensor as standard on my bike, how would I get it to work with the display? I could get a temp sensor for an rs, and fit it to my head...but then could I just wire it into that display?

Also what about the rev counter... as I don't have a feature for that on my current display, so how would I wire that in?

Yeah mate, universal.

Read that, my Bro got one for his yz.

You just buy the speedo and it will come with everything you need.

As As a matter of fact I did actually. But the vapor stores time which is the deciding factor lol.

But those units are very good and universal. Don't need anything other than what is provided for.

hmm. I think I prefer the look of the koso though. Whats the rev tacho like on the vapor....is it as erractic as everyone makes it out to be?

Never had any problems with the tacho lol. Been using the same one for years now. It's accurate to THE rev lol it tells you the exact rev.

It's a worth while purchase if you can't get a temp reading out of your display. I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've pulled over before a seizure because the temperature has spiked. It's a killer indicator.

Did you get the one with the built in indicators?

I had a look in their website and there seems to be quite a few universal variants.

Also, will i still need the aprilia temp sensor or just splice into the rad hose with this kit?

Yeah I just bought their 'universal' one. And bought a 6mm temp sender to put in the cylinder head for a better reading.

And I bought the dash, it's not a requirement, but it's a feature worth having IMO. My brother didn't bother and I don't blame him.

I m thinking to get a temp sender and wire off and rs - like in the above pic. The stealth should be able calibrate the readings from this being a universal unit shouldnt it..if its soldered or crimped in?

I don't know. Just use the Vapor kit stuff. There is no need to go and get an rs sender to use with the vapor when the vapor gives you everything you need.

Yeah the rs sensor wire goes into the main loom, so bit of a nightmare to get hold off. The sensor that comes with that vapor kit, looks as if you have to splice it into the rad pipe opposed to having a sensor in the head? I just thought the ones that go directly into the head like the rs one would give a more accurate reading.

Does the vapor have any form of oil warning light also? The stock mx digiclock has a lubrication warning light.

Yeah you can get an m6 adapter that goes into the head. That's what I have.

I still don't get 'lubrication' light. Oil level light.

The vapor unit is just a universal clock. So what ever you wire into the clock is what you get. If you take the feed from the lubrication light and wire it into the vapor dashboard then yes you can have oil lubrication light.

After reading the manual, found here: www.manualslib.com/manual/363537/Aprilia-Mx-125-Ed02-2004.html

I think the oil lubrication light is just a maintenance scheduler to tell you to check the lubrication system for faults.

It's a feature built into the odometer that triggers maintance intervals. As said two strokes are fairly high maintenance.

Thanks that would make sense :)

Did your bro use the m6 on his yz, or just stick with the sensor that came with the kit?

Does the m6 just screw into the head like the rs one does?

Lastly. I had mega small leak on the rad before I stripped everything down....Everything was tight, no tears in the rubber from what I could see. So unsure as to why it was leaking.

He just spliced the coolant pipe. I did too initially. But I accidently snapled the cable and decided if Inwas going to buy one then I's buy one that slides into the head.

You're talking a few degrees lower. And it's not the actual temperature you're interested. You're interested in a sudden spike that is indicated iminent seizure.

Sod it then. I'll stick to the one that comes with the kit. Any ideas on the coolant leak?

Cool.

Ordered pretty much everything now, so fingers crossed they'll get here by saturday and I can start building her back up.

My inlet manifold is cracked slight, but still intact on the inside, so no need to buy one I dont think....Saw one of Ebat from a breakers, but it looked in much worse nick than mine.

Just need to find out what size the bolts are fpr my oil pump - had to round the old ones off to get them out.
