Sight glass full when doing a oil change Noob Question
Permalink

hi lads

this is a stupid question i know ! just trying to confirm with other users

done a tranny oil change drained oil left for 15 mins to drain. mesured up 750ml of new 10/40 semi oilly goodness, and poured in!

anyway ive done a good few oil changes in my life time just havent don the dt since i got it. with the new oil in the sight glass is compleatly fully with no air bubbles is that correct

2000 DTR of Course :)

there is only one line on the gear box which i assume will be the "lower" mark,

anyway if it is overfilled will it harm it in any way. my 4 thumpers never seamed to mind with a extra 200ml in or so ?

cheers fellas

Make sure you lean the dt over towards the drainage plug and what not. But if you're confident that the majority of it has gone then 750ml and you're good to go.

They have an overflow on them anyway so it won't be the end of the world.

Personally, I don't think my sight glass has ever worked. I know what's suppose to be in there. I empty it all and put in 750 ml. Rather have a little too much than a little less.

Never really done it from a warm engine. And definitely don't hang around for 15 minutes either. Usually I just pull out the drainage plug and let it flow out. Then I lean the bike over and let it continue flowing. A little dribble doesn't concern me. Then I wack in 750mls. But that's just me.

once did a oil change and notice the sight glass was dirty and and could not get my finger and cloth in to clean so pot cloth round end of a screw driver and gave it a good HARD rub....and the fcking thing came lose and poped inside ....new oil all over the floor and had to take side caseing off and push it back in place ....lesson learnt lol

What a Pain !!!

i assume its not very thick then ?

i would much prefer a good old dip stick!! or a oil level bolt. these glass things are about as useful as a chocolate teapot !!
