Best time to sell a bike?

yO,

I'm going to be putting my 125 sm bike up for sale shortly, but I was just wondering if I will lose much cash if I waited until the end of the summer to sell (so I can still be riding in the meantime while I do my test etc), opposed to getting rid now.

I was speaking to my local bike shop, and they seemed to think that I wouldnt have any issues selling it for a good price, even after summer, as 125s appeal to both young riders, and people that just want to do thier cbt and call it a day there.

But I thought I would post here to get some enthusiast opinions??

I saw so many bikes advertised cheap as chips in the middle of winter this/last year. Although there are a lot fewer so it would make sense that they would be selling at a higher price but nope!

Sorry to hear you're selling up pal, but glad you also got into biking. Even when you're blasting about on a bigger bike you will still look back at your 125 days. Regardless of what your brother tells you, 125's are wicked machines to ride :D

I should really get a bigger bike haven done my test enall just cba. Haven't ridden my dt for about 6 months, sad times.

If the bikes running sweet, tax and tested then it'll be sound. Decent 125's are always in demand.

How is your Starlet mate?

Mines been running for a few weeks now and it's an absolute joy. It's not without its faults. I am told it smokes a bit and it's leaking coolant lmao. I just said he needs to drive faster.

Thanks for the replies lads.

Hey Cal....as you know its been a journey and a half to say the least...learnt a hell of a lot since owning it, but I've been bitten big time by the biking bug...love riding.

I think my bro has started to respect the lil 125 beast...as hes seen it be transformed from a blown 2 wheel death trap, into a quick lil sm. I can kick his ass in the twisties on the 125 believe it or not, but I obviously get left for dust in the straights.

Bikes running sweet as at the moment...The clutch cable snapped on it a few weeks back, but I soon realised the tension on the cable wasnt adjusted properly in the first place. New cable fitted and ajusted properly...All good again.

Starlets running sweet as too.....TD04 power is wicked!! Just sorting out lil bits and bobs on it now...ya know how it is with these cars...they're never finished...ya can always find something to fiddle with.
I'm on the hunt for a new boost gauge, as I think my current one I has isnt acurate.

lol @ needs to drive faster....thats the spirit!. Wheres it leaking coolant from? What clolour is the smoke?

I think the turbo is caput. I just fitted my electrical Stack Gauges :D And it's reading just under a bar on the stock CT9 which I read somewhere is too much for that stock turbo so it's probably damaged the seals. I think I'm going to go for the WEPR Garret turbo for my build so don't care if I destroy this CT9.

Mate that's awesome glad to hear it. You definitely bought a cracking 125 and it will be a hard bike to beat in terms of it's spec! As said I think it's great to start on this, at least if it wasn't for you then it's only £1400 and a CBT. Wicked.

Keep in touch definitely pop in on this forum every now and then.

I still haven't seen any photos of your starlet yet!

TD04 is a wicked turbo for those cars.

I know you were looking for a cheaper one, but I always figure buy cheap buy twice. Plusa boost gauge is something you can take with you to the next car!

You should be all good at under a bar man.....Some of the old skool crazy mofos used to push the lil ct9 to 1.2 bar...but some say they're way out of their efficiency range past a bar.
You can't go wrong with the wepr stuff and you'll get some nice figures with your forged block and the right setup.

Yeah its a fun bike to ride, even more so since I switched to a 15t front sprocket...takes off like a rocket.
I'll be sticking with the aprilia family though....sxv 550 is what I've got my eyes on next. My test centre are giving me a free assessment to see how many lessons I need. But once I pass my theory, I'm pretty confident that doing the mods should be straight forward enough...fingers crossed.

Yeah mate, will do. I always come on this site daily.

lol....shes not the best looking starlet, but shes mechanically sound and goes well so I'm happy enough. I'll try and get some pics over to you soon. But its basically like how yours was when you first got it, but my mr2 rims are sprayed black, and its on the deck on teins. Was going to buy some new rims, but cba lol.

Socks has got an apexi gauge for sale, but I'm not too sure its a genuine one or else I'd get it.

Ollieh, who I've met lives near me, is convinced that Socks knows some of this stuff isn't genuine, Naughty Naughty!

I went overkill on my two gauges, cost me around £200, but to be fair you just want an indication of what's going on.

I didn't take any lessons when I did my test. My advice is this, watch YouTube, alot of it. And copy what the better motovloggers do and go out on your 125 and practice, practice and practice. It's easy.

Best thing is to practice in an empty car park on a Sunday evening. You need to be able to do an emergency stop without locking the wheels up, bigger bikes have ABS, but your 125 does not. Master it on the 125, and you will PISS the test :D

That's the best thing is you can go out whenever you want to practice the bike test, unlike the car.

Yeah I remember you saying, so I ve been watching a good few videos on youtube.
I ll get practising some emergency stops asap.

It's surprisingly tough to get right. I had been riding 3 years day in day out and I still didn't get it right when practicing.

Stack Gauges. They're lovely and suit my colour scheme.

Yeah? What couldnt you seem to master when you were practising? And what bigb bike did you do your test on?

I had a look at them on demon tweeks. Never come across them before....and they're accurate?

Nah didn't need to master it, but it's easy to lock up so you nerd yo practice stopping on a non-abs assisted bike.

I'd hope so payed enough for them. I know a few people who use them, the mechanical versions not electrical.

Ok Cool. I'll get out this week at some point and turn my drifting into my emergency stops! Did you have any issues with the theory? I've been using the Free Motorcycle Theory App on my phone so far, but its been a good few years sine I passed my driving test and did hazzard perception.

My bros giving me hard time again, about getting another sm, and thinks I should get something more suited to long journeys (supersports or street fighter), so I can come out with him and the ducati boys. But sod that, I love sm's, so will definitely be sticking to that style of bike. Going at 150mph plus doesn't interest me at all.

Managed to get a used genuine autometer gauge yesterday - Had one on my old starlet. So I'll be giving the one socks has a miss.

I love SM's. I loved my sports bike shape. For a weekend toy...ahh it's so hard to say. The sports bike you and your brother could go to places on! The 125 SM is great round town and up the hill and light green laning. But to go to places like Bourton-on-the-Water, give me a sports bike.

He may be right mate. And you will have fun no matter what you ride. Just cause you have a sports bike doesn't mean you have to go 100+ mph on it everywhere.

^^^^This is the dream one day!^^^^

Savage 500cc which would beat any thou 4 stroke round the track!  With the right rider of course!

I've got my heart set on upgrading to the Aprilia SXV 450/550 mate. The only other bike that I do like is the Aprilia Dorsoduro 750. The Dorsoduro would probably be the most sensible option, as its a road bike opposed to a full on race bike like the sxv. But with the limited amount of miles I do each month, I think I would rather have the sxv.

Supersport wise, I'd gladly have a Panigale or RSV4, but would need to stick up a bank to get one!

Whats that pic of? I can't see it.

RZ500

Panigales are overrated mate. A friend of mine has one. He says when he goes out on it, it's like an event. Something really special. But people in the know, they don't make great bikes. Just the exoticness of having one makes them desirable.

I'd go for something like Honda VFR 400 or a GSXR600 as a first bike. Personally, I wouldn't buy an italian big bike. I'd stick to the Japanese simply as they have proven themselves time and time again to be reliable machines that don't cost the earth to fix.

When it comes to the smaller cc's then I don't care who makes it as they're all easy enough to fix. The bigger the bike, the less you will want to work on it. So it just makes sense to have something completely and utterly reliable.

Personally. That said the RZ500 is anything but reliable. It's a 500cc V4 Two stroke. But comes back to being easy to work on.

Thats interesting. A dude I know has one (part of my bros ducati crew), older guy been riding all sorts of jap superbikes for years, and he thinks his is the best thing since sliced bread. Said he would never own another jap bike. Different opinions from different riders I guess.

I do see your point, but I really don't want a super sport. I have looked at alternative sm's to the Aprilia, but as always, they just don't compare out of the box, spec for spec with the sxv.
As always, I've been reading shed loads of research, speaking to dudes who own them, and more importantly the specialist who work on them. They're meant to be quite reliable when setup correctly.
So if something was to go wrong, I'm confident I could get it repaired without breaking the bank.

Failing that, the ktm 690 smc was on my list initially also...nowhere near as fast, but meant to have great Austrian reliability.

that RZ looks like a beast.....was that one of the Moto GP bikes in that vid you sent me a while back called the unridables?
