hi guys ive just bought a 1999 dtr its completly standard and untouched, everything seems to be workig as it should,it starts 1st or second kick,it ticks over fine, and revs ok in nutral(it spluters abit in high revs )when i ride it its ok untill 6k revs then it just coughs and spluters,it does that in every gear.
ive had 50mph(80km/h)at 6k revs out of it down hill,is that normal?is it because of the restrictions that its so slow?

ive just taken the reed switch out of the speedo.it revs up a little better in nutral and it now goes to just over 6k revs when im rideing it before it. starts  coughing and splutterng again.

Sounds like too much fuel/ not enough air mixture.

Just try this.

Take off the seat.

Remove the Snorkel on top of the air box.

Have a quick blast up the road.

Any better?

Check air filter. Could be clogged up with crap

.ive just cut the wires to the reed switch and its even better, its still coughing and spluttering but ive just got it to redline at about60-65mph down hill so we are getting sumwhere!!!!! im thinking the spluttering could be the standard exhaust, powervalve or the carb?as the bike has been sitting for a while(like i said before its perfect up untill 6k revs, its even getting there quicker)in neutral it revs alot better aswell..

New spark plug probably wouldn't go amiss, and if feeling flush get an Iridium.

5 mth sat first fings I would have done change plug - wash and slean filter - change engine oil - empty out old fuel and put new in - carb off and full strip and clean also at same time clean reeds - check 2st oil pump and clean throu - and would have done all this prior to even trying to start .

You took the air filter off and ran it??

What about the snorkel? That's where the airs drawn in from.

i took the exhaust off earlier and it rattled,i tipped it up and one of the semi circle restrictors fell out.i checked the powervalve was set up properly and it was going past the open point,so i adjusted the cables, it now revs past 6k,its not got alot of power but atleast i dont have to change gear at 6k revs any more,i mite get it mot,ed and sell it and get a dtr thats easya to de,restrict,(or already de-restricted)iv been reading that the 99 dtr,s are a pain in the ass to de-restrict?the one ive just bought is completly standard and original, its even got a original battery and untouched tool kit,i mite get more for it if i sell it as it is,b4 i mess stuff up?
