Hi Everyone, I'm new to the site and wondering if someone can help me please, I've got a 1990 dtr that I've recently restored from the frame up (just had it powder coated) and everything's fine apart from a strange wireing fault that I've come across. When I put the new clocks on the bike I realised that the Neutral light sempt to stay on even when I was in gear. After a bit of further investigation the wire from the magneto (sky blue) was wired directltyto the engine instead of the neutral switch. so I placed the wire back to the neutral switch where it belongs and the bike will now not start. So I put the wire back to where it was it runs fine ?????? it seems as thought its using the neutral light wire as some kind of earth, is it supposed to do that?? is the bike only supposed to kick up in neutral ? has anyone got any ideas? and will the bike fail the test for the neutral light switch not working ?

The only thing I can think of that would stall the bike or cause it to not start is the kill switch on the stand, are you sure its nothing to do with that
The bike should still start in or out of gear, i can't see the neutral light making a difference
Thanks for this quick responce, no the side stand swich is not there at all,i never reconnected one, what was happening was that (sky blue) wire was connected straight to the engine casing creating the loop for the neutral light to come on peminently obviously bridgeing the neutral switch, which made perfect sence in my mind to why the light was always on. I was just a little shocked when I put the wire back to where it should be and the bike didnt start?? (when kicking the bike over I only get a faint glow on the neutral light)
I was wondering if the bike would use this wire as an earth if it had a bad earth somewhere else (especially with having the frame powder coated???) I've not got a battery connected currently either maybe that would help
No, unless the bike has been rewired it should only start when in neutral. Its a safety thing. If i remember correctly the wire comes from the CDi to the neutral light and then to a switch in the gearbox. Ill have to dig out a wiring diagram and take a look.
if you removed the stand switch make sure that you have bypassed it where it plugged in to the loom (snip off the plug and join the wires or cut the plug off the switch wires and join them and plug it in)
I forgot to do that when i rebuilt my bike not so long ago. Put it all together, started it and went to pull off and it just stopped :( had to take all the seat and panels back off again i was gutted..lol
Thanks guys its all starting to make sence a little now, I thought the none starting thing may have been a safety aspect, I've got the battery on order and I'll also try bridging the side stange switch and getting a new neutral light switch for the gear box and see where that gets me.
