many things,

Needle slipped,
giro not working behind it,
Cables dissconnected,

is the light behind it still working? this would show you dont have a wire to it problem power wise at least.

If the bikes running i'd suggest guaging your speed by gear and rev's and keeping an eye out on ebay for one failing that just dont over take moving cars. not worth the 150 it would cost for a new one. may as well get a second hand one and just wing it until then. If you get pulled for speeding as long as its not rediculasly fast then a copper should be understanding when you explain 'its only just stopped working you just want to get it home and book it into the garage this weekend'

You need to check if the wheel is actually spinning the speedo cable

Could be the drive unit on the wheel. The internals are made of very thin metal and have a habit of misshaping. THey are easily taken apart using circlip pliers.

To be honest I think you need to diagnose the problem first before buying parts that you might not even need.
