Hello people. Now, I've heard about two-strokes gobbling through spark plugs, and wasn't at all surprised when my DTR started doing it, but is it normal for a bike to be picky about what type of sparkplug? The standard B9ES sparkplug will last for about 500 miles before blowing, the BR9ES (I think these have radiowave protection or something) will last about 75 miles and the super duper expensive Iridium (BR9EIX I think it is) lasted....will you believe it...one rev before dying...£9 gone in one blast of smoke. Has anyone noticed a similar thing happening, and what sort of mileage do you normally get from yer plugs? Cheers

f**k knows whats goin on with your bike fella, the normal ngk i had in my bike when i got it, so not sure how long it ahd been in there....then i did over 1000 miles on it and it was fine, but i put an iridium in it , and done a few hundred on that with no probs
hello mate i had the same problem with the same spark plugs as you've listed, i now use BR8ES and its lasted ever since i got it (about 250 miles ago).
Ah right, you should tell me if it lasts longer than 500 odd miles and I'll give it a try. I don't really mind changing it every 500miles, I just dread coming home some night at 2 in the morning in the rain and it dying on me. Did your Iridium last one rev as well?

The question is why are they stopping working. Are the plugs physically broken? (you thoroughly clean them, and even afterwards they create no spark) Or are you just throwing away good plugs that you have fouled?
What do the plugs look like when you remove them? soaked? covered in carbon? white? brown? black?
The R in a BR9ES i believe means it is a resistor plug and has a little twist-off cap on the top, that apparently is the resistor and is not needed because the bikes use a suppressor cap to attach to the plug.
hey Darkangel! The plugs aren't physically broken when they die, and still spark well when tested outside the cylinder. But when put back in, dear Dolores refuses to start via kickstart or bump starting and she makes the same noise as when you've ran out of fuel on the main tank when you're riding along. I've tried cleaning the plugs, to no avail. After they've died, that's it. The plugs do look fouled, black and oily. I read in the Haynes manual that although a plug may seem to spark well when tested outside they might not work when exposed to the compression and heat of the barrell. Or something like that. Anyway, things seem to be going better now. I changed the coil a week ago, (at about 500 miles since the last plug change) and now I've done around 700 miles on it. I'm hoping (and also hoping this isn't a really stupid idea) that it was down to a faulty coil frying them...is that stupid? I'm sure all plugs have that little twist off thing on the top don't they? It may well have been down to a faulty coil frying the plugs. Plugs foul when you have too much fuel in the combustion chamber and they get smothered, say Possibly caused by running rich When it fouls try giving it a bit of throttle to get it going.
My bike is running rich, generally from cold starts on choke it starts up fine, but if i go for a ride then stop and leave the bike standing for 30 mins or so it can be a bitch to start, requiring a bit of throttle to get going.. and i just had a full engine rebuild too.
Yeah, mine's a bit like that. Ah well, everything's sorted now. Well, except for it still being a dodgy bastard in the rain. I got a new plug cap as for it, but that hasn't sorted it out. D'you think rain could be getting in the airfilter? It doesn't have a snorkel, I don't even know what one looks like - would duct tape do?

I wrapped my coil in a plastic bag with holes in it for the wires to go in and out, sealed it all up with tape so no water could get in and it seems to have done the trick. Cheers for all your help!
