Nice one, it looks in half decent nik for its age. That has do be the weirdest place ive ever seen a DT parked :), what did your neighbours think when they saw you trying to get a DT up 6 floors?? :)
Looking forward to progress posts, also mate that does like look a DEP front pipe.
Currently cleaning up the DEP pipe but heres today's work ...
Got a bit more done this evening , stripped lots more . A couple bolts broke but I'll drill them out .
Everything bagged and tagged lol
And at the end of day 2 here's how it's sitting , not sure what I'll get done tomorrow but I'm currently polishing up the DEP pipe as it's too cold to keep working .
Hell of a lot more pics from today but no need to post the rest , mainly took them so i can remember the wiring , till tomorrow ...
FFS You don't mess about, are you rebuilding the engine and sending the frame away to get powder coated? Lookin good so far, some nice fresh plastics on it and it will look mint.
No the frame i wanted to powedercoat but im struggling to find one in the area . The engine will be sorted last and probably go off to a garage . I know nothing about these bikes or engines . I want it at least running then i can learn from that stage onwards .
Please do mate .... so i can call on you when i'm stuck lololol
New pics whenever you can dude , i've got your other ones saved on my PC and use them as reference pics ( not got a manual yet ) ... hope you dont mind .
NP man although I didn't think I had put pics up here of me stripping the bike? No matter man its always worth investing in a Haines manual. If you need any pics taken just post a message up.
Stripping the bike was easy, it was the putting it back together for the road that was a bit trickier.
Didn't get home till after dark but still did what I could , have a looksee
It got messy tonight ..
Then cleaned up a few more bits .. .
As usual I'll update tomorrow with whatever's going on . Long day again but hope the have the frame stripped . The rear brake thing is not coming away from the frame though . The bolts are completely rounded off and i cant be asked with them . Will mask properly and work around it .
Wasnt easy at all mate , was crapping myself about seized bolts all the way through . I really should have worked in the daytime but i was impatient lol
I used a bit of bleach on the bottles mate , soaked them for a bit .
Day 3 morning after pics , all these bits to finish off hopefully today
Right day 5 , manily finished stripping bits and cleaned them all up ready for coaters . Couple bolts that broke off and the brake thingy will get taken off at Yamaha tomorrow . Cant be asked fighting with rounded off bolts anymore .
pics
Damn brake thing wont come off
These can stay to one side for now while i concentrate on the frame . I'll carry it tomorrow for the quote though . Also i need the garage to get the disc off the front wheel .
These bits I cleaned up a bit and will be coated soon . And wheels frame etc ..
Day 6 and I've just got back from Yamaha :D ... haven't had a chance to go powdercoaters yet , hopefully later today .
This is where the project slows down a bit because it's money spending time
Pics from today so far ...
Up early and cleaned the frame up a bit , wanted to see how bad the paint was .
Off to Yamaha ( using the lift this time :D ) . Carried all the other parts for the coaters quote but as i said i didn't make it there
Rust isn't that bad for 15 years old
Back and fully stripped finally after 6 days
Cnut
And here's everything that's going to the coaters
Depending on price I'm bringing along these bits to get done as well
Soooo .. just waiting for the damn boiler man to come do his checks then i can bugger off to the shop to get my quotes :D
Oh yeah there was a last annoying problem to sort , random bit of string on the frame . Not sure what I'm going to do but toolbox will be back out tonight . If anything a visit to Halfrauds for cutters
Have a go at the frame with a wire brush to get as much rust off as possible. Most powdercoaters will only coat the item.Their job isn't to prepare the surface and rust thats under the coating can reappear. Also bits like the brakes master cylinder will need to be stripped of all pipes and seals otherwise they will melt in the baking oven.Similar problem with the forks too i'd imagine.Tell the coater specifically what bits you want masking off too.Fitting the forks into yokes that have been coated on the inside is gonna be a right pain in the ass.Theres some awesome colours and finishes available.Have a look here for ideas and price lists http://www.aerocoat.net/
i got a quote a while back for powdercoating of a frame and it was a silly price and as already said i was told all parts must be free from paint, rust and grease before they would even look at it needless to say i didnt go ahead with it
i have a compresssor and a spray gun at home but dont have the setup to use 2k or equivelent paints safely so i used hammerite thinned down to the propper requirements and shot that from my spray gun the result was a nice smooth shiny finish which was also hardwearing at a fraction of the cost
id say unless youve got the time and patience to strip clean every last part id consider other options m8
Will get onto the frame with a brush mate , and thanks for that link , awesome work they do on there .
And tbh all i have now is time lol , I'm sure i can handle a little prep work but I'll have a word with the coating guy . I spoke to another guy on Friday who does bicycle frames and bike tanks and he was advising me also pretty much what you guys are saying . But the powdercoater will be sand blasting everything aswell to remove crud and paint
Cheers peeps and update very soon , weekend so gave it a rest for 2 days
Ok so got my quote from the powedercoaters today .. £150 for most of my bits . Broke the bearing on the bottom yoke so them , wheels , rear shock ab , forks and engine will be done the second time around .
Mostly spent today prepping the bits ready to go for tomorrow . Put bolts in all the holes and removed all bearings , washers etc .
am looking forward to seeing your frame once its coated
lol im buildin my dtr in my kitchen at the moment cos of the cold unfortunatly i need mine on the road asap and cash is short so havent had the time or money to go the powdercoat route but its clean so it will do for now exellent work m8
that powdercoat job in the pic looks flawless some nice ideas youve got there m8 the dtr has a great shape and when its used to its full potential they can be made to look so sweet
anyone know the name for them bars on the pic of the black bike i want that type but im not sure where to look
Thanks mate , simple is best , actually got some more pics from another forum . One sec , this one I'm going to post is probably my fave . It's nice clean and pretty simple
Oh yeah here are the pics of that black bike finished , i dont know the handle bars mate but can point you in the direction of his bike build ( it'l mean joining a German forum though )
wow now thats some transformation on that first bike
the very first pic is what my bike looked like not long ago like it had been dragged from a pond lol
although these bikes look the bollocks the main reson for mine is to enjoy some off roading i know if i went too bling i would be always worrying about scratches ect i just want mine clean but not too clean if you get what i mean however i am already having idears for a heavily modded second bike just for the road as ive got nearly a full bike in bits
