just bought my first dtr125 ,am i correct in reading on the forum there are three main basic steps to de-restric this model ? its a 2002 plate model, could someone point me in the right direction please on de-restricting. also would i get away with gutting the stock exhaust out ? or even just fitting a dep tail piece and gutting the rest of the stock pipe out. thanks.
Powervalve needs to operate correctly off the ypvs or turned to open. Exhaust needs gutting or DEP system.Use a free flowing can.DEP,Big One,Arrow etc Speedo switch CDI needs changing for derestricted one
up to now i have totally gutted the stock front end pipe, fitting a big one tail piece today or tomoz, taken white oblong block from back of the speedo and taped it up,was a bit late on reading up on the manifold so thats been done, taken the rubber snorkel off,i am not blocking off the hole in the large air bottle as have read not to do this. just by doing these mods would the performance improve a lot ? not too sure on how to do the ypvs, keep reading up on it but still not getting a clear picture on how to do it,or should i leave alone and just stick to what mods i have done thanks
Im not too up on your model, but the site info shows 3 restricions on yours ..
Exhaust [2 crescent shapes in xpanny ..] bits to remove.
Inlet manifold bits to remove [Jurys still out on this, Gix say's not a restriction, but aids flow over reeds ... He's had a lot more to do with DT's than most, so i'de go with that !?]
Speedo Restriction via reed switch @ 60 mph ..
You've done all this !
But your not happy with performance ?
So ...
YPVS ? Im under the impression that your PV is working ok on the Servo Motor ? & i don't think its restriced by this in any way ? or what's the point in the speedo switch [double restrict, belt & braces ? Doubt it ?] The later 04 on had the YPVS restricted [grounded out wire in speedo takes care of this !]
So if it's moving ok, is it the right way round ??
& general feeling is that early CDi's were not restricted, but later were ??
If a CDi is resticted, how does it do this ? Weaker Spark at high revs [Some Honda CRM's ?] Is the Cdi acting as a rev limiter ???
But i thought we said No Rev Limiters Within System ??????

The cdi does indeed soften the spark at high rpm preventing a full powered firing cycle. As far as i know no one has derestricted the actual cdi box, you have to replace it or run an earlier loom and cdi box. If your not sure if the ypvs is working correctly then follow the steps shown on the derestricting page http://www.dtr125.net/tuningf.htm If you still don't think its working then undo the cables to the valve and take the front exhaust pipe off.Turn the valve manually until its in the open position.Bolt it up tight and do NOT rejoin the cables.Reassemble.You will notice the difference if it was closed before.
thanks for the replies, finished what i had to do today, mainly it was welding the exhaust back together, tried the bike for my 3 mile journey home and its a totally different bike,..still not sure on the snorkel been taken off, gives it i suppose in saying a more induction sound, may try it weekend with it back in and see if there is any difference, but the bike now flies as to before it was strangled to death,..thanks again
followed the restrictions as on the dtr page, white oblong box under speedo, gutted the stock pipe and added big one tail pipe, snorkel taken off and i did actually modified manifold...acceleration is brill, top speed yet to be confirmed, will have a decent run out weekend to test this. not touched the power valve..will post a update weekend on top speed.

That would be good to find your out top speed because I have done all the things you have mentioned and the acceleration is quicker but it won't go past 63 mph, I have an 01 which I think is basically the same bike as yours.
Im glad it's a bit faster because stock DTR's are quite slow what with all the restrictions they have.

i hit 70mph easily on the way home from work tonight but ran out of road, will let you know on sunday evening as to what the bike will hit,i myself have always gone for acceleration rather than top end,but a bit of the both would make me more than happy
If you hit 70 mph on a level road and still pulling then the PV is working fine.If it was set closed i doubt you would make 70mph The engines in the DTX and DTR are very similar.Internally they are exactly the same but have different generator covers.DTR are plastic one piece while DTX are alloy two piece. DTX has provisions in the cases for electric starter too. Top end, crank, clutch, gearbox are all identical

ok thanks, think i was a bit suprised on how well they accelerate to be honest, people had told me that they pull well, but i did not realise on how well
up to now i have hit 77mph but i have yet to give it a proper test with no wind,in right conditions i would have thought maybe 85mph,its hard to say, that is just a guess.
mine hit nearly 90 on a flat racing our lass in her car before i put the new head and piston on still not run it in yet so we ll wait and see what its like when i finally get some good weather might just get some better acceleration maybe
