Hello all just after a little advice!! when i let the revs of a press the brakes on my 2000 dtr the headlight dips i brought a new battery but thats made no difference someones going to take me out thinking ive flashed them lol can anyone HELP!!! Thanks
Was it OK when you got it & problem has just appeared ?
Did you charge new battery up before taking the bike out ?
Does your brake light, come on as it should [Not way bright or dim ?]
12 Volt leccys do weird things when you get a bad earth somewhere, but im struggling to work out how one could make headlight dim ?
If you had a chaffed wire on the circuit for the rear brake light or as part of the circuit which lit the brake light, and it was touching to earth somewhere, when you braked it could be such a low resistance path, that it diverted all current flow through to frame / earth, which would make headlight dim ?
Does it do it on high beam as well as low beam ?
Have you changed the rear lamp recently ?
Not looked into DT leccys really yet, but ..
Q' To All .. Does the headlight on a 2000 come from general leccy system via battery / alternator ... or from a dedicated lighting coil ????

The lighting system works directly off the generator and then through the regulator, not the battery. Most bikes headlights dip slightly when the brake light is activated, not by much though. Does it dim really bad? If yes then i'd say there is a crossed wire or bad earth connection
Thanks all as Gixergav says it runs off the alternator, but as you no you let the revs of to brake so it dips quite bad,bad enough to make me worry a little as i use it for work in the mornings Any ideas on where to start looking for a bad earth?
Take the bodywork off and look for any traces of corroded wires.Look closely at any areas where the loom sits up against the frame for chafed wires. Give all the connector blocks a good dousing of WD40 and look for loose wires on the blocks
The bike was like it when i brought it the bikes in mint condition the bloke i brought it off must have really looked after it! yea fully charged the batt and the old one!! The brake light works fine and it happens on both beams havent changed the bulbs no it just seems as if the light zaps all power its fine when the revs are full on running off the alternator Thanks for your time lads
If the brake light works fine on both switches, but the headlight almost dies ... 90 % gone .. 10 % headlight left or less ..
If this bike came like this ... then ...
Someones got the wires mixed up somewhere .. i reckon ... !
When the circuit to ground from the brake light circuit goes down ..
[im assuming is wired from yam as 12v live constant to light / gounding out to 0v when either switch pressed 'Closed'] [i aint looked at wiring diagram yet ..] !!
... it is also taking the live to the headlight down to ground, so the current instead of flowing through the headlamp 'Lamp' to ground .. [It takes the path of least resistance].. flows through the newly grounded out wire [as the switch is pressed for brake light] So the headlight dies, until the brake switch is released, which breaks the second path to earth, so the current then reverts back to flowing through the headlight 'lamp' !
This won't be doing your lighting coil any good at all, as it will be subject to overload whenever you press the brake light switch .. Suprised it aint' fused somewhere, if it was fuse would blow [i aint looked at wiring diag yet !!!!] !
My headlight circuit [04 can't turn lights off .. ever !] Is from the battery system i think .. as when my engine stops on kill switch .. headlight stays on .. yours is different !!!

The live to the headlight 'May' be connected to the Earth for the return path for the brake circuit ... [Dunno where ??] when brake switch 'Closed' grounds out rear stop bulb {this is good !} but also grounds out live to headlight ! [this is Bad !]
