Another DT125R derestriction topic as I am really confused..

Hello there.

I don't know what else to do so I'm posting here to get some help. I bought a Yamaha DT125R, 2001 version.
Everything seems to be really okay, except it wont rev over 7000 rpm with third or more gear. First two gears go into red area of rev meter. It sometimes revs over 7000 rpm when standing still in neutral, but then falls back to exactly 7000 rpm.

Some of my electrics did not work, like the horn and blinkers, so I removed the front light to see what's going on. I think the previous owner made a mess there, but got them working again. I read something about a "reed switch" which restricts rpm-s to go over 7000 rpm (?). I opened the speedo and saw it had a cut wire going into it (white with a black stripe) and there was a switch mounted between that wire (wire itself headed into speedo with other 3 wires, but only 2 wires went into light bulb of speedo, the other 2, including the cut one, went to white and oblong plastic thingy which had a glass cover on it and two little pinch****s in it). I removed the mounted switch (not the reed switch ?) as it was doing literally nothing. But then I found out I must not cut the reed switch wire (if it is that wire?) and went desperate because it was already cut.  I should say my speedometer cable is broken, ordered a new one from a local Yamaha dealer (that can't be the problem, right?). I tried earthing that wire into many places, didn't work. I unplugged all the speedo wires (from a switch) and still nothing. What can I do to remove that RPM restriction? cry

I cleaned the carb, cleaned the air filter and put some special air filter oil in it, changed all the oils and the problem remained so I'm guessing it's electrically restricted.

Any kind of help is REALLY appreciated! Thanks!

im not too clued up on the later models but it sounds like you have a restricted cdi

to fix this you will need a cdi from an early dtr and a loom

Plus you need to gut the stock pipe or use a dep at the least

Ah damn, I was hoping it wouldn't be that difficult. I'm pretty sure I have an Arrow pipe..
Do they sell derestricted CDI's at Yamaha dealers or do I actually have to look for used one which isn't restricted.

It's a 2001 bike. I have an Arrow pipe. I have tried earthing the "reed switch wire", but nothing. I guess my CDI is restricted not to go over 7000 rpm in 3rd or more gear? Can they remove this restriction at Yamaha dealer?

it might just be your front pipe then, some bikes are different.

The CDI comes standard on the older DT's as in there were no restrictions in it .

So if you bought the CDI from say my bike ( a 88-93 ) then it'd be the one you want without any fiddling .

But here's the clincher which has been said before further up , you'll also need the loom off the older DT . I don't know if yours is a kickstart or electric but beware the loom is for kickstart only !!

So , if you walked into Yamaha with £378 for the CDI and £120 for the loom , and then the price of a kickstart , you'd be laughing .

My advice , eBay is your friend and figure out if it's worth the change over even if it costs £10 ;)

also try all avenues first , IE front pipe etc . get a DEP , it's tried and tested as one of the best . Heard of Arrow but wont buy one

Also Yamaha or anyone else cannot mess with your current CDI , that's not an option evileye

It is worth the change, my bike barely goes over 55 mph with that RPM restriction and seriously lacks power in acceleration. My friend has a year newer DT without any restrictions and it's an animal compared to mine. I don't think it's the pipe's fault, my DT is imported from Germany from what I know, and they use those silly restrictions. And yea, my bike is kick-start.

I must try my luck at Yamaha dealer, there is nothing on eBay..

Ofcourse I am replacing all the parts the previous owner didn't.. air filter, all the oils, bearings, brakes, tires, grips, soon piston & rings and so on..

Weird that no one else here didn't have the same problem somewhere in the past, would like to hear how he or she fixed it.

Thanks for all the help so far.

I'm an epic fail and a true novice when it comes to motorcycles. RPM restriction got fixed with the new speedo cable, THAT was causing it not getting over 7000 RPM when it was broken (some sort of security system?). I still have some sort of restriction installed, as it doesn't go well over 80 km/h, today I reached 95 km/h though, but then it dropped to 80 again. Still CDI restrictor I presume?
