Noise from brakes
Permalink

When i driving or pushing my DTR forwards it making a high iiek iiek ieeek sound from te front brakes.
When i'm hitting the brakes this sound stops.
Also when i put some water on the brakes this also seems to help..
What is causing this noise ?
is it fraction between the disc and brake pads ?

if its only when pushn or going slow alot of bikes do that it is where the piston in caliper rubs against disc, it is basically scratching it causing the sound, basically get a flat head screw driver, put the head of it in between the caliper piston and the disc(be careful) and put a little force against the piston to push it back in, without pressing front brake move bike forward and back,if the sound has gone, then it is the piston causing it smile.gif

Top job, I replaced the front pads recently thinking this would cure the problem which I can only hear when riding along and breaking at lower speeds.

I'm not able to recreate this noise with the bike on the padock stand and spinning the wheel by hand and operating the break leaver.

How many of these spring are there - one per pad?  I will take a closer look to see if there is one in both sides as i can't honestly remember.

Cheers, ECA.

Springs all present and correct hmm I think I'm going to investigate this further using a stethscope with an extension tube, may look at bit strange riding down the road wearing one of these but if it gets me to the route of the problem I can live with that smile

Hmm, in that case could maybe be a warped disc?

Possible, I think I need to do some serious investigation and i'll defo give the disc a look over. Need to get the bike in good shape as I'm planning on riding it down from Suffolk to Italy, fully loaded with camping gear, for the Stella rally in July.

When i had a simular issue i pumped the piston out a bit and cleaned all the crud off it, put a bit of copper slip grease on and pushed it back in. I also gave the pads a quick rub with wet and dry to take the glaze off. I've not had any problems since.

Where in suffolk are you ECA?

I sense you gonna be walking like John Wayne riding from Suffolk to Italy on a DT doh I did 156 miles from Somerset to Birmingham that wasn`t a comfortable journey.

Cheers Fused, I'll give that a go.. it's a bit of a strange noise, could almost do with someone else having a listen at some point or a bit more time to investigate it with a stethoscope.

I'm near Ipswich, what about you mate?

You're not wrong, I'm hoping that plenty of stops and a + 1 on the front sprocket should make it a bit more comfortable.

We've managed 270miles in a day coming back from France a couple of years back so I'm hoping if we break up the trip over 4 days say it should be possible without walking funny afterwards smile

She can get pretty loaded up too though we've manage to cut down a bit on the stuff we take disbelief

I'm Ipswich town center mate, just round the corner from Halfords. Have you done much green laning round this way? i don't know this area for ****..

lol at your pics, do you have to fight to keep the front end down with that much on the back?? All thats missing is a kitchen sink! haha
My frame has been 'shortened' at the back by the last owner, so no good for luggage unfortunately :/

Did you manage to sort the problem out?

Cool, as it happens i'll be heading down to the Suffolk Retail Halfords tomorrow (one near the Range) for some Easy Start (long story) Hoping to get down there just before they shut around 7.45pm..

I'll PM you my mob no. drop me a text if you're about and we could meet up and say hi. I'll be in the car, passport photos on the way and collecting girlfriend from college after.

Not had chance to look at the problem in any more detail, we spent last weekend green laning around thetford as it happens :), miles upon miles of tracks which were great fun!

I'll also PM you a link to a few pics *thumbsup*

Cheers Dude, must admit on that particular occasion (last couple of pictures) we could have survived for a couple of years probably lol, took way too much stuff.. pleased to say we've got it down to more sensible proportions now (first picture) though I reckon there is still scope for cutting it back further... not going to give up the three-man tent that there's room to park a bike in and standing up is a must for me  smile
