Cheerz buddy! The pics came out a bit bigger than i expected!!

The previous owner had had it for around 4 years and had only changed the rings so i assumed it was the original piston so thought for piece of mind and coz im gonna be raggin it in the summer i best get it done!

Yeh i really like the blue frame think the bike has been stripped at some point and the frame powder coated.

How did you run the top end in on your bike mate and did you notice a difference in how the bike ran after the rebuild? I didnt seem to lose any power its just the rattle seemed to get worse over a couple of weeks.

yeah thats a point haha. get rid of the YZ sticker :D:D DT :D

yeah im running it in at the minute.
i have noticed already it pulls away much better, and it pulls up hills even at 4k revvs lol much better than b4, was always trying to stall up hills especially with low revs!

for running it in i started with letting it idle for like 45 min. not really so important ive heard but i did it for peace of mind.
then i let it completely cool, then warmed it up by idling for 15 min, then road around accelerating up to 4k but only cruising at 3k.
then after the 2nd ride, im letting it warm up by idling then keeping it at or under 4k.
then after 100 miles of 30 mph (4k revs in top gear) i increased it to 4.5k. doing that atm, going to 5k at 150 miles or 200 miles depends how bored i am.
it sounds bad but you get used to it and the better you run it in the better it will rag in the summer :D and last for longer :D

have a look at my bike, gets better as you go along. top end rebuild is on the third page.

Cheerz for that seiki and yeh it was the previous owner that put the yz stickers on! Im still undecided about taking them off or not!

Nice one craig think ill do similar to you regarding running the top end in minus the idleing for 45 mins. Have heard ppl talk about running a top end in in half an hour etc but im defo going down the baby it for 300 - 500 miles route!

Ill have a read of that thread now mate cheerz!!

Should be getting my bike back in the morning so will report back on how she runs!

yeah that would be in motocross or track racing. They leave the bike to idle to warm and then use the warm up laps to run them in! crazy really but who has time to do 300 miles on a track day?!?!?!?

sounds good. be very careful with the first 100 miles very crucial

probably, soak them with hot soapy water, peel off what you can after soaking. then a griddle sponge like for washing up and rub the sticky **** off.

yeah rip em off!

so is this your second dt after your first was nicked?:S?

Rite then i didnt get my bike back because the standard size piston they ordered didnt fit. The mechanic said it has been re bored in the past and needs a 1mm oversize piston and that he should have measured the bore before ordering and appologised.

He also said because the barrel has been re bored by 1mm my bike will be around 135cc, is this true? He has oredred the right piston kit and i should have it back 2moz now!

My bike has only just done 10,000 miles so im wondering why it has been rebored before!

What you lot think? Cheerz

if it was rebored b4 10k that means he has blown the piston. or cracked it but a number of things. he blew it up basically.

he must have cracked the piston, because for it to be rebored out by 1mm it must be bad. Standard rebore is 0.5mm.

mines had 2 rebores, its at 15k miles.
ive done one and one was done at 11k.
it wasnt run in on the first and its slowly got worse thought my ownership

and it might be 135cc but i doubt it would be that much! not sure ive never looked into it. wont do much anyways lol smile.gif

Cheerz for that craig some bits to think about!

Well i got my bike back today from the mechanics after the top end rebuild. The bloke said to me when i picked it up that its still rattling and when i kicked her over and started her he wasnt lieing!! She seems to be rattling more now than before the rebuild which im a bit concerned about.

My mate who races motox and fixes his own bikes said that if im not happy to take it back down which i mite do.

Anyone any ideas on this??

Cheerz fray

hmmmmmm.

well if its more rattley thats not good. It MIGHT have something to do with that you didnt get it rebored this time. or that the piston isnt the correct size?? hmmmmm

youve got to remember, its a 2 stroke, they are always abit rattley.
the piston will need to bed itself in properly, mine rattled more just after i started it rather than now (170 miles since)
it may be the new small end bearing knocking abit

but if your not happy go and pay him a visit and see what he says.

remember, take it easy ;)

Cheerz mate! I was thinking the same that the rattle mite go once the new piston and rings have bed in. Think im gonna use it for a few days and see if it goes or gets quieter. If it stays the same will go back to them. I saw the barrel and it looked fine but i suppose it can be a bit difficult to see by the eye.

I got the old piston, rings and small end bearing back off the mechanics just to make sure they had fitted all the parts the ordered! Ill upload a pics if anyone wants to see the old piston.

Yeh im taking it real easy, only done 10 miles since so its all still brand new really. Gonna keep it under 5,000 rpm for a few hundred miles to run her in!!

it wont go. never does.
annoying but its a 2 stroke, will always rattle.
the real way to tell if your bike needs a rebuild is if it shakes while your riding, aswell as loud rattling and knocking noises. i swear before i did the rebuild, over 6k i was having a foot n ass massage off the engine lol

yeah put up a pic of the piston il put one up of mine :D

yeahh i did less than 4k to reassure myself lol

Lol ive seen the state of your piston in that thread you linked me to, looked quite bad!! Tbh the piston they took out of mine has only a handful of very light scratches and looks ok. Can only see very light marks past the lower ring so they wernt letting much past. No marks round the skirt etc and the top was in good condition.

Think what im gonna do is do a few thousand miles on this new piston and if the rattle persists then strip the top end and inspect the piston. If it looks worse than the one ive kept that was changed ill either get a 0.50 rebore and a 1.50 oversize piston kit if the barrel is scored or bang the old piston back in with some new rings if the barrel looks ok.

What i also want to do is get the run in process done as quick as poss and check my top end etc to see if ive lost any power coz its hard to tell with half throttle and no more than 5k revs!

Right bit of an update about the rattle after the top end rebuild!!!

Have done 120 miles of the run in so far with the rattle staying the same when today i went to ride over to my parents house. As i pulled on the drive the rattle went mega loud, 10x louder than when i got it back after the rebuild. I hit the kill switch strait away and when i started it back up the mega loud rattle was gone and was it was back to the quieter rattle. This **** me up a bit!!

I rode back to the shop where i had the work done and said i was concerned about the work they did. We had a chat and he listened to my bike saying "yeh that doesnt sound right, sounds like the piston is rattling in the barrel. Then all of a sudden he said "oh **** i didnt measure your barrel i only measured the old piston" then went on to say that it could have been slightly the wrong size piston in to start with!!

To cut a long story short hes having the bike back Thursday morning, hes gonna strip the top end again measure the barrel, inspect the piston and if needed fit a new, correct sized piston kit free of charge.

Am a bit annoyed they didnt do it right the first time but fingerz crossed they will sort it now.

What you lot think?

hahah yeh i wont be going back there for any mechanic work to be done, ill just pop there for my oil etc!

I thought to myself a decent mechanic wouldnt have made that mistake.

Have you any idea what the loud rattle would could have been? It was the same noise as before just way louder!

Another thing is that since they did the work loads of oil has been dripping out my exhaust, i told him this and he said it could be that coz its a very slightly too small piston its letting oil past.

Maybe! I saw the barrel tho and there wernt any scratches/scores at all. Ill get down my mates and get him to do a comp check when i get it back after they have done it.

Im thinking could the ring have been clipping the exhaust port causing the loud rattle?

Ill let them try and sort the problem out first i think. They dont seem to be trying to get out of getting the job done properly.

The rattle i had to start with before they did the top end was very slight and you could only hear it on the overun as it dropped into low revs not a constant rattle like it is now!
