Exhausts: To gut or not to gut?
Permalink

Having cut open my exhaust to find nothing in there and seen that others have done the same, I am starting this thread to give people an idea about what they will find in their exhausts.
The key thing here is to note the part number on the exhaust before any cutting is done

My exhaust has a part number of 3MB-14610 and has a cone / tube restrictor in the neck of the exhaust, this is the only way that this exhaust is restricted and this cone / tube is fixed by 3 welds that can be cut with a dremel type tool

Once again dont do any more cutting to this version of exhaust

Other exhausts have different things in them, some have half moon type rings in there and some have catalytic converters. I will not comment on those as I dont have the proper facts and numbers but please if you have these facts and pictures feel free to continue this thread as an 'Info' thread. Mods will make it sticky wink

Thanks...Paul

My exhaust is off a 2004 model DTRE the writing on the exhaust says: YAMAHA ID0-00
This model has the cat convertor restictor and will need cutting open at the biggest part of the pipe to get to it.
I dont have any pictures but a big give away that you have this pipe is that the cover near where your right leg goes is made of plastic, and where the exhaust connects to the engine there is a pipe that comes out and connects to a rubber pipe which then goes to the airbox.
So before cutting open check if you have this writing on the exhaust and the other things i mentioned above;
Also be sure to look around the narrow bit of the exhaust which connects to the engine for any big blobs of weld because this might show that someone has already de-restricted it.

Yeah, cheers for that mate. Maybe when I cut it open to get the part number, if I chemical metal over the stamp marks, then grind them smooth, I might get 1/8bhp extra hmm

Seriously, where is the part number? I've looked all over it, but can't seem to find it. Someone has hand painted it at some point with what looks like black Hammerite, so the stamp marks have probably been filled in.

A 2003. Just been googling and it looks like it needs to be cut open and the metal disc restrictor cutting out. I can mark up and cut and I may know someone who can weld it back together, so all's good.....hopefully!
