Find an engineering firm that will do head skims, if theres not one local, http://www.pjme.co.uk/ here do it, Fray off this site has used this company, was happy with the service
Then ring up your local yammy dealer (or any dealer actually, can all get yammy parts) and order a genuine head gasket for your bike, abit pricey but just go there with pattern cheap sets for £20, not worth the effort in 100 miles time!
When you get the head back, gasket on, head on, tighten the bolts just a little bit each time going across the head, like a star shape if you like, just nipping the bolts up slowing each time, gets it flat and good compression
Id get one of them skimmed tbh mate, wont be a good enough seal and will probably happen again. If you dont wanna spend much money, do what i did, i got mixed grade wet n dry sheets, put the head on 100% straight oven glass and sanded it back for ages, worked fine for thousands of miles now
edit: looked online and i couldnt find them, need a genuine one or it will blow couple of hundred miles down the road.

No offence Craig but I dont subscribe to this skimming malarky without proving its needed first. Yeah perhaps it does need it but check it out first, any good enginnering company could do this with a surface place and some engineers blue paste.
Deetee what he is saying is 9 times out of 10 when a head gasket blows it warps the head, even a slightly warped head will cause lower compression than could be achieved and premature gasket failure. Fair enough you can leave the head without skimming it and get away with it but a lot of the time it can just cause problems down the line.
Yes I see what Craig is saying but you must understand that I have worked in engineering for 35 years and I have learned in that time not to take things for granted. Even if it is 9 times out of ten...and I must say that this probably depends on how far you ride it in this state
Then for the tenth time it worth doing the checks, a home mechanic could do a lot to check his gasket face is true for himself, first visually and than with some plate glass and a feeler gauge, if you cannot get a feeler under it at any point it may well be ok, if you think something is wrong..try to prove it is
yeh i know where your coming from, but how often does a head gasket blow on your doorstep? never lol always have to limp it home for a few miles in which time your head can easily warp
Dt heads are very prone to blowing and if it was me i would get a skim just for piece of mind and coz its only cheap. It does normally warp the head aswell as woll says from limping home.
Can see exactly where u are coming from deetee your old skool just like my Dad!
Deetee not every body has rac cover lol, imo i think its a rip off i would say in the last 2 years i would of used it a grand total of 0 times so really not worth the money.

Craig, my pattern gasket is about 2500 miles old now, not even a sign of warpage of water loss, etc. Trick? Torque wrench...! "couple of hundred miles down the road" is misinformation.

Fray hit the nail with 'Old Skool' Like Me' Dad' ...
It wont suprise you that i'm with the OldSkool boys on all this ...
Engineering for Engineerings sake ? Not for me Unless the head is warped ...
I would be happy using pattern gaskets, but if Yam' are not daft money i would prob' pay 'Double' ? For factory supported parts ..
Would never ride bike [or drive a car for that matter], if the engine temp was stratospheric for whatever reason ... HEAT IS THE ENEMY OF ENGINEERING ! Landrover head gasket ? 30 quid ?? Landrover engine block cracked between pot 3 & 4 ... 1500 quid & a $hitload of grief ... [I didn't drive it hot, some other tw@t did before i got it ..] Prices go to 400 quid & 4800 quid if your not doing work yourself ! 'Wasted' money on unused RAC for 3 years ? 160 quid ... Bargain
Been a member of RAC since ?? Dunno [it used to tell you on your card !] .. Mebbe' since Mid 80's .. Didn't have it in first few years of riding / driving, too expensive ! Costs about 50 quid for full recovery whatsit level of service .. The thought of NOT having breakdown cover fills me with dread .... Would you leave a 20 grand car abandoned with no way of getting it back safe home / garage ? Or a DT near fook knows who's house ?
Remember Malc / DeeT etc .. are from an era of No Mobile Phones & had to push bike miles to nearest farm & ask to use phone !! Plus when your an old tw@t like me .. You've seen the highs & lows of biking, and on the days it goes wrong .. It really goes wrong ... Bike in crumpled heap ... You unable to walk ... In an Ambulance [which the swines will send you the bill for !!!] .. Just get coppers to call breakdown & hopefully you will be awake enough to give em' your breakdown membership details !!
It's not something i look at as a cost .. It's an insurance policy for when things f*ck up .. and things Always F*ck up if you ride a bike for long enough ...

Personally i'd use gen gaskets everytime unless i was that skint i couldnt afford them in which case id wait till i could. I've rebuilt tractor engines with cheapish sets before and ended up going back a few weeks later to rip the fecker apart again and having to use gen gaskets.
I mean why do you think pattern gaskets are cheap??? I'll tell you why they cut corners and change the design ( if they didn't do a different design they would have to pay yammy £££ for using their design)
£160 on breakdown cover for 3 years?!?!? and unused you sit have to much ££ wanna give me some?
And since when did ambulances charge??? i didn't get charged when i wrote my cbr off
And insurance policy for when it goes tits up... hmm like your thinking but thats what mates with vans are for or going to someone local and asking to leave the broken heapa **** in their garden/garage/yard/property (it's always gona be a heapa **** when you break down lol) that's what i've done before know when i've broke down.
Well i say broke down, worst thats happened was a damp ht lead 1/2 way home from work so i just pushed it the mile and a bit, ****ing near killed me though it did some right big hills near mine and they seem bigger when you pushing a bike up them.
If i'm being honest, i probably would as well ... But it's such an easy thing to strip / re-build .. That's it's not the end of the world if it does go to $hit ! [Not like Tractor Engine Re-build !!!] I used to re-build my Landy [regularly ! Fookin thing !] + used to use pattern gaskets ... but it used to do em' in regular ! So yea, mebbe best using yam !? If Yam's were 90 quid & pattern 12 quid ... No .. What's the price difference ?
£160 on breakdown cover for 3 years?!?!? and unused you sit have to much ££ wanna give me some?
No ...
[One of the advantages of being an old ba$tard .. is financial security ! You can fookin have it all though, if you can make me 18 again ! ]
And since when did ambulances charge??? i didn't get charged when i wrote my cbr off
March 10th - 1984 ... I was scraped of road just past Newmillerdam & taken to Pinderfields in Wakefield .. Not a long journey. They sent me a bill for ambulance use, think it was 26 quid [long time ago !] .. as it was an RTO ... They charged ! Things may have changed, mebbe Norvern ambulances are just grabbers ! .. But i deffo got charged ... I was gutted ! I considered sending nurses an invoice for my Baggy Jeans [sort of elasticated ankles, and big baggy legs .. like $hite tracky bottoms, but denim !! ] that they cut off me while i was out !! ..
And insurance policy for when it goes tits up... hmm like your thinking but thats what mates with vans are for
Yea ... But see ... My policys like DeeT's ... It's personal .. So it covers me for my cars too ! Cars are ba$tards to get in vans !!
It also covers all my $hite bikes .. [i have some REALLY $HITE BIKES .. you think DT's are unreliable ... some of the cr@p i ride is lucky to get to the end of my fookin street somedays !! .. But the salient point here ... Is ...
I AM THAT MATE WITH THE VAN ... [See cars thread somewhere on site .. ] So it's a catch 22 job ..
Also ...
Transit Vans [which is also covered for my 52 quid or whatever] .... Transit Vans ... ARE BA$TARDS TO GET INTO YOUR MATES VAN [the mate with the van, yea ?]
and ...
I'm uncomfy with the idea of leaving 7 grand bikes in anyones garden ! [see below..]
and i'm old .. we worry about these things you know !!!
and i'm old again .. with regard to Pushing Bikes ... ! [see below again !]
and some of my bikes are 250 Kg .. Try pushing that fu*ker ... [and again !! ..]
Look ... It's just a good thing to have .... period [as the yanks would say !]
or going to someone local and asking to leave the broken heapa **** in their garden/garage/yard/property (it's always gona be a heapa **** when you break down lol) that's what i've done before know when i've broke down.

YES THEY FU*KING DO .... BEEN THERE, DONE DAT ! nO MOrE ... !
This threads well & truly hi-jacked ...
Did the geezer get his bike sorted ??
No it's Not always needed to skim heads [but compression is on the up, so mebbe' it's the more speed option !! ]
And Malc's cheapy gasket is holding fine ... but it's not a tractor or $hite landrover !!! I suspect Malc' doesn't bray his DT through every gear, on every street .. as i think he may be ... 33 or mebbe even 34 ?? and he has a torque wrench .... and supports The English Football Team if his French thread is anything to go by ..
